  1. The Alabama High School DiplomaBeginning 2018-19 Mobile County Public School System

  2. Why have there been so many changes? • The purpose of these changes is to allow more flexibility for students in pursuing their interests. There are many differences in the courses or pathways students may take yet they will still earn the same diploma.

  3. Credit Earned in Middle School • Middle School students earning high school credit for Algebra 1 HR will receive the credit. However, they must earn a minimum of four (4) math credits in grades 9 -12 in the high school program. Students must earn at least one math credit each school year in high school. • If your child is in Algebra 1 now, you have the option of me changing Algebra 1 to MCPSS Math 8 Advanced at the beginning of 4th quarter so that your child can take Algebra 1 next year. Once a course and grade are on a transcript, it cannot be removed, and a student cannot take the same course twice if he/she received a passing grade.

  4. Credit Earned in Middle School • Any high school level courses attempted prior to grade 9 will NOT be used when calculating high school grade point average (GPA) and/or class rank. Only courses attempted in the high school program (Grades 9-12) will be used to calculate grade point average and/or class rank.

  5. Block Scheduling • High Schools run on Block Scheduling • Unless otherwise specified, all one (1) credit courses are completed in one (1) Semester. They meet each day for 90 minutes • 1/2 credit courses may meet for 90 minutes a day for a quarter, then another ½ credit course will be taken the next quarter. Ex) Health 1/2 credit and Driver’s Education ½) • ½ credit courses, also, may meet for 45 minutes a day as Mini Block classes.

  6. Block Scheduling • Your child will have 4 – 90 minute classes and 1 – 45 minute (mini block) class each day each semester. • Ideally, your child will take 2 core classes and 2 electives in addition to a mini block each day. • So, your child can earn up to nine (9) credits each year of high school for a total of 36 credits by the time he/she graduates!

  7. Alabama High School Diploma The recipient of this diploma must meet the following requirements: • 28 units of credit in grades 9-12 and in certain courses in grade 8, as required by the SDE and the MCPSS, including 21 ½ units of specifically required credit. • 6 ½ units of elective credit • 4 units of credit in English instruction • 4 units of credit in Mathematics to include Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 with Trigonometry, and 1 (one) Mathematics elective • 4 units of credit in Social Studies to include World History, U.S. History – Beginning to 1877, U.S. History – 1877 to Present, U.S. Government, and Economics

  8. 4 units of credit in Science to include Biology, a Physical Science (Physical Science, Chemistry, or Physics), and 2 (two) Science electives • 1 unit of LIFE (Personal Fitness) – Marching Band, JROTC would fulfill credit – not dance. • ½ unit of Health Education (usually paired with Driver’s Ed – 10th Grade) • 1 unit of Career Preparedness Course (Career and Academic Planning, Computer Applications, and Financial Literacy) • 3 units of Career Technical Education (CTE), Arts Education, and/or Foreign Language – students are encouraged to complete two courses in sequence. • ALL students will be responsible for creating a Career Portfolio on al.kuder.com which must include a typed letter of introduction, typed resume/career pursuit information and evidence of career exploration.

  9. Pre-Requisites to Math Classes • When pursuing the Standard Diploma, student are often encouraged or recommended to take pre-requisite Algebra 1. This class DOES NOT count toward one of the four required math classed for graduation; it counts as a math elective. • It is typically scheduled in the fall, and Algebra 1 is scheduled in the Spring Semester with the same teacher, so he or she can pick up where he/she left off in the pre-requisite course. • Basically, it means your student is taking Algebra 1 all year.

  10. Endorsements… There is only one Endorsement for the Alabama High School Diploma! Advanced Honor’s Endorsement To earn this endorsement students must meet all of the requirements for the Alabama High School Diploma PLUS the following specific additional requirements.

  11. Advanced Honors Endorsement • Students must pass all core requirements at the Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, or International Baccalaureate (IB) level. • Students must pass Algebra 1 and Geometry as one semester courses. • Students must pass Honors Algebra 2 with Trigonometry and one other Honors Math elective. • Students must pass Honors Biology, College Prep Chemistry, College Prep or Advanced Placement Physics, and one other upper level Science elective.

Bear in mind, your child may have to go back and take courses previously not required. • Indicate your choice on the Signature Page. This must be done prior to preregistration.

  15. Weighting of Grades

  16. Is there a minimum level of math required for graduation? Yes. The minimum level of math is Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 with trigonometry, and one additional math course in this order. For students taking Algebra 2 instead of Algebra 2 with Trig, Algebra 2 is the final/terminating course in the sequence; where as, Algebra 2 with Trig allows students to continue taking high level math courses. Remember, the Advance Honors Endorsement requires Algebra 2 w/ Trig.

  17. Credit Restrictions • Prerequisites – Any course offered for registration purposes that lists prerequisites must be followed as stated. (English 10 cannot be taken until the student passes English 9). • Duplicate Credit – In accordance with Alabama Administrative Code – a student cannot earn credit toward graduation for a course that duplicates the course content for which credit has already been awarded. Ex. Algebra 1 taken in Middle School cannot be repeated in High School.

  18. Courses taken away from School Campus • All courses for high school credit taken away from school campus on another/alternate school organizational site must receive prior approval by the high school principal and guidance services supervisor. • The student must requisition approval by submitting a written request along with the supporting information/documentation regarding course and/or program to the principal. The principal should forward the request to the guidance services supervisor.

  19. Attendance Policy • Students are required to be on time for school. • Students are allowed four parent notes for any full term class and two parent notes for any ½ term class. Further absences will require a doctor’s note in order to be excused. • Students over the age of 17 who accumulate more than 10 consecutive or 15 total unexcused absences during a single term (one semester) may be withdrawn from school. • Attendance will be taken in each class. • If you receive more that four unexcused absences in one full term class and two in any half term class, you may not receive credit for that class.

  20. Attendance Policy – cont’d • Your parent will be notified by the principal as to why you will not be receiving credit. • Parents or guardians of any student having a chronic ailment that may cause the child to miss school during the year are required to provide the school with a doctor’s statement verifying the child’s condition. This must be done as soon as the problem occurs and repeated at the beginning of each semester. Even though the student may have a chronic ailment letter on file, the parent/guardian must provide a note for each absence due to the chronic ailment.
