Description, skills and relevance to forensics • Criminologist work variety of factors to determine why criminals commit crimes, determine and analyze criminal patterns based on biographical, social and psychological factors. Which then are used to aid law enforcement in assessing potential criminals. That being said, the relation between a criminologist and forensics is that in order to become a criminologist, one must study courses such as forensic science to be familiar with the criminal law, the criminal justice system and other courses that may aid them on the field to solve crimes.   5. Educational Requirement & Salary • Criminologist are required to have a Bachelors/Masters degree for employment. Additionally, some states require criminologist to pass a licence exam. (in the United States) • Highly intellectual field • Majored in sociology, psychology or criminology as undergraduates - this helps understands human nature and actions. • Majors for criminal justice and history • Masters in behavioral Science • From a survey conducted by the National Association of collages and Employers show that those who graduated with a bachelors degree earned $32,2204/yr. With an entry level that was $20,880 to $44,00/yr.(2012) The more experience you have the higher of a salary a criminologist gets. With: • 1-4yrs of exp. can expect to make • $32,220/yr • 5-19yrs of exp. can earn from $30,000 to $75,000/yr • 20+yrs can earn $42,600 to $82,500/yr Criminologist working for the federal government often have greater earning than those that work at the local/state level. • Federal government criminologists can earn upward of $84,098/yr • Local/State criminologists can range between $40,695 and $56,993/yr - on average. *In the field of criminology, female Criminologists earn $29,300 on low end and $51,492 on high end. Example & Relevance to my Career What relevance does criminologist have with my choice of career, I would say a huge relevance due to the fact that it is a dream of mine to work on the fields and become a criminologist myself one day. What is a Forensic Microbiologist and how does someone become one • A Forensic Microbiologist needs to have completed their Ph.D in microbiology or a Master’s in science. • A Forensic Micro biologist is the person behind the scenes analyzing samples that come in from crime scenes, (e.g if an unknown substance is found around a dead body at a crime scene, it would be given to the micro biologists to analyze and report.)

What they do and how much they make • Their career is a big part of forensics because they do all the behind the scenes analyzing of substance’s that can link people back to the crime scene (e.g. a chemical a local company uses is left at a crime scene). • Their salary range is $39,000 to $66,000 • An example of a Forensic Microbiologist is David Hodges who plays on CSI. Even though he is a fictional character he does “properly” example what they do.

  22. Required Skills • Patient (because it takes a long time to analyze results and to find matches) • Teamwork (because you noramly work in groups to get jobs don faster) • Be thorough (because the samples you get might be all mixed up/ your reports have to be very accurate)

  24. What is it? • Forensic Odontologists are specialized dentists who are called to assist in the identification of an individual when other ways are not possible. Whether they’re looking at someone’s jaw&teeth to identify them or trying to link bite marks to an individual because of suspicion of abuse or assault. • They are also expected to explain and support their findings in court if necessary.

Education - University • A program of 4-8 years. • Must obtain a D.D.S (Doctor of Dental Science) before your able to receive a masters in dental science. • In addition to classes required for D.D.S you need to take classes in… Forensics and anatomy anthropology, methods and principles of forensic odontology, oral and forensic pathology, and case work. • Along with work placements and pass a qualifying exam.

Dr. David Sweet • He graduated from UBC Dentistry in 1978, after running his own business Dr. Sweet was invited back to UBC as a faculty member. • Dr. Sweet is now the director of the BOLD Laboratory at UBC Dentistry. • Research areas of Dr. Sweet include…Forensic DNA from teeth, bones and saliva; Human bite-mark forensic evidence; and use of dental characteristics in human identification.
