Reaching Out How did you get their contact information Who you are and why are reaching out Ask for a 20 minute informational interview Absolutely do not ask for an internship Suggest a phone call, but be open to meeting in person if they request it Ask them for the best number to reach them at (gives you more flexibility)

  8. Example: Reaching out… • Follow up introduction personally • Reference: • Mutual connection • What you want to speak with them about (in this case, company and role/culture) • Brief description of your background • Request to speak briefly, based on their availability

Preparing For The Meeting • Book a phone room via Parker • Due your due diligence on the company: • Read company website, recent news articles (trade pubs + Google Alerts) • Brainstorm 10 – 15 questions to ask; use this as your “fallback” • Consider ‘buckets’ of questions • eg. Career progression, company culture, industry trends, etc

  11. Leading the Conversation • Stand up while conducting phone interviews (if comfortable) • “Thank you for this opportunity” • Reiterate your story/reasons for contacting • Use questions as a guide, keep organic • Stay true to your time constraints • End strong: • “Thank you again for your time” • Recs for additional people to speak with • Permission for follow up

Following up • Write a thank you note the following day • In the note: • Thank again • Request for contact info of additional contacts • Over the next few weeks/months • Don’t let your contact die if you still interested • Follow up with additional questions if you have them • Periodically send articles related to what you spoke about (if organically it makes sense) • Be sure to contact the people they recommended
