  4. Sam Houston Who: Sam Houston was chosen to lead the Texas army against Santa Anna during the revolution. What: He led the Texas army to victory against Santa Anna. He then became the first president of Texas.

  5. When: He was put in charge of the army in early 1836. He defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. He became the first president of the Republic of Texas in late 1836.

  6. Where: San Jacinto is just South of Houston. This is where Houston defeated Santa Anna. In late 1836 the new government picked Houston, a new town, as the capital of Texas. It had been named in honor of Sam Houston. Why: Houston was commander of the Texas army and the first elected president of Texas.

  7. General Santa Anna Who: Ruler of Mexico and the head of the Mexican Army. What: Defeated Bustamante to become president of Mexico. He chose to not follow the Constitution of 1824. He ruled Mexico and did not share the power. He lost Texas to Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto.

  8. When: Defeated Bustamante in 1832 and was elected president of Mexico in 1833. Lost Texas to Sam Houston in 1836. Where: Ruled all of Mexico including California and Texas.

  9. Why: Santa Anna is important because he had the chance to keep Texas as a part of Mexico. If he had worked with the settlers and met their demands, Mexico might still be a part of Texas today.

  10. James Bowie Who: He was an experienced soldier known for carrying a type of large knife, called a bowie knife. He was a friend of Sam Houston. He died helping to defend the Alamo.

  11. What: Houston sent Bowie to the Alamo with a message that it was to be destroyed so that Santa Anna could not use its weapons. He agreed with the others at the Alamo that it could be used to slow Santa Anna down on his way into Texas. He shared command of the Alamo with Travis but they didn’t get along and fought. Bowie was sick when he got to the Alamo and by the time the battle took place he was not able to get out of bed. He died (according to legend) after having shot and stabbed several Mexican soldiers that entered his room to kill him.

  12. When: The siege of the Alamo began on February 23 and ended on March 6. Almost everyone, including Bowie, was killed.

  13. Where: The Alamo was an old Spanish mission that was falling apart. It was strategically located along the Old San Antonio Road-one of only 2 major routes through Texas. San Antonio would be one of the first Texas settlements the Mexican troops reached.

  14. Why: Bowie believed that the Alamo was a good place to make a stand against Santa Anna. He and the others knew that if more Texans didn’t come help, they would die defending the Alamo. They chose to fight as long as they could to give Sam Houston time to get the Texas troops ready to face Santa Anna. Houston used the time wisely and was able to defeat Santa Anna a month later.

  15. William Travis Who: Travis was a Colonel in the Texas army. He was sent to the Alamo to help defend it against Santa Anna. He shared command with Bowie. He is famous for his letter that pleaded with Texans to come help defend the Alamo. Only a few showed up and he died when the Mexicans attacked.

  16. What: Travis had come to Texas from Alabama. He had left behind his wife and children and gotten land from Stephen F. Austin. He was part of the rebel group that was fighting the Law of April 6, 1830.

  17. When: Travis came to Texas in 1830. He died at the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Where: The Alamo in San Antonio. Why: Travis died defending rights he believed that Santa Anna was taking away from the Texans.
