  2. 9-6-12 Bell Work: • Work on your poster. • You only have 20 minutes to complete your poster so don’t waste time coloring or adding extra touches until you are all done! • MAKE IT BIG ENOUGH TO SEE!!!

  3. 9-6-12 Objectives: • I will present my poster with my group. • I will take a quiz to show I understand safety in the science classroom.

  5. SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY Mrs. Guerra Science

  6. General Guidelines • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner;

  7. Read instructions before starting experiments; • Follow all directions carefully

  8. Don’t touch anything until instructed to do so;

  9. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor;

  10. Do not eat food,drink beverages or chew gum in the lab;

  11. NO HORSEPLAY IN LAB! • Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!

  12. NO RUNNING

  13. Keep work areas clean and tidy; • Keep aisles clear;

  14. Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment • Safety shower

  15. Eyewash station

  16. Fire blanket

  17. Fire extinguisher

  18. Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions; • Clean equipment and work area after use; • Return all materials to proper location

  19. Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals; • Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab;

  20. Goggles must be worn at all times during a lab; NO YES

  21. Dress properly during a lab; • Tie long hair back • No dangling jewelry • No loose, baggy clothing

  22. No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot) • Wear lab aprons • No contact lenses

  23. Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately;

  24. If a chemical splashes on your skin, immediately flush with running water and notify instructor

  25. When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose; NO YES

  26. Double check labels on chemical bottles • Take only as much chemical as you need; • Never return unused chemicals to their original containers;

  27. When diluting acids always add the acid to the water; • “Do as you oughta – add acid to water”

  28. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands; • Use a dust pan and brush • Place broken glass in glass disposal container

  29. Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware; • Never leave a lit burner unattended; • When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others;

  30. Never look down into a container that is being heated; • Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!

  31. Never pipet by mouth! • NO! • YES!
