  5. To put it bluntly… No tuition fees / funding=no online resources

  7. UK Access Management Federation • A body which provides a framework for accessing online resources via single sign-on solutions • Ensures trusted relationship between IdP and SP:‘rules’ they must follow,defines policies etc. So why change?

  8. Athens • Long established relationship • No complaints about the service • All staff fully-trained in its use • NWHC Learners recognised the term

  9. However… Athens= proprietary service (EduServ)= Costly (c.£5,200 pa) • Substantial funding cuts = seek cheaper alternatives

  10. Shibboleth • Open source = cheaper than proprietary option • Active Directory integration = No account management necessaryNo additional username and password

  11. Utilised elsewhere in college • Moodle • Office 365 • Heritage Online (OPAC) • ClickView(in near future)

  17. Hidden costs • IT dept. time to make internal configurations • Alter library publicity materials • Raise awareness of new system • Alter notes field in library catalogue • Dealing with enquiries from learners used to Athens

  18. A rocky path • New firewall installation • WAYF-less URLs (MyiLibrary issues) • Clashed with opening a new campus – IT dept. high workload during Summer • Not all resources accept Shibboleth IdP • SPs made alterations at different rates, one in particular very slow
