What is a textile component? • Extras added to the fabric to make a textile garment • Without a component it would be hard to make a garment • Components are often pre-manufactured • Some components have to be hand made e.g- shoulder pads • When choosing a component you have to concider 6 things...

  3. 1- Care 2- Cost 3- Quality 4- aesthetic appeal 5- safety issues 6- end use

  4. Components and their function... Component= Sewing threads Function= To hold fabric pieces together, to add fastenings, to add decoration Examples= Cotton, Polyester, Metallic and silk threads

  5. Components and their function... Component= Beads and sequins Function= To decorate with colour and texture to catch the light . To add weight to a product Example= Plastic, Wood, Metal, Pearls

  6. Components and their function... Component = Ribbon, Binding, Cord and Braids Function= To add decorative features. To be used as ties and fastenings Examples= fabric strips with different weight, patterns, widths and fibres.

  7. Components and their function... Component= Interfacing Function= To aid sewing, add strength, give shape and structure, or to be used as a bonding glue Examples= Non-Woven sew or iron-on fabric; paper backed or web-fabric bonding glue

  8. Components and their function... Component= Pre manufactured motifs Function= to speed up decorative process and add a feature Examples = School and team badges, children’s animal motifs

  15. What is a fastening? It is a component used for closing products for fit, security, or enhancement. When choosing a fastening you must concider... 1- Would it suite? 2- what role does it have on the product? 3- how secure is it? 4- cost 5- Does it need to be invisible 6- Can it be manufactured?

  16. Examples of fasteners... Zip Fasteners • One of the most secure fasteners • Easy to apply to products • There are different types of zips, with different weights; and some are nylon or metal Some types of zips include • Fixed ended (base of zips) • Open ended (for jackets) • Concealed fastening (invisible)

  17. Examples of fasteners... Buttons -Wide range of shapes and sizes • They are not just used to fasten but also to add decoration • The prices vary

  18. Examples of fasteners... Hooks and eye • Usually made out of metal • Can be hand sewn or machine sewed onto the product • They tend to be black or silver

  19. Examples of fasteners... Velcro - Hook-and-loop fastening • Used for quick and simple applications • It washed well, and is hard wearing • The longer in use the less effective it becomes

  20. Examples of fasteners... Press-studs • Simple flat closure • Metal or Plastic • Cheap

  21. Examples of fasteners... Eyelets and lacing - Metal or stitched eye lets are placed on the product and lace threaded through • Used for adjustment in sizing of the product • Mostly seen in footwear

  22. Examples of fasteners... Buckles - Most common in bags, belts, and shoes • Made from metal or plastic • Modern buckles have LED lights in them
