  1. Nuclear Physics Peer Review Processes Objectives Types of activities and relevant processes New project /major upgrade Project R&D Exploitation Infrastructure Theory Nuclear physics grant panel Timetable

  2. Objectives • To support the implementation of the agreed STFC strategy for nuclear physics. • To allow the community the opportunity to respond to new initiatives. • To provide a mechanism that will promote the retention of key skills and staff. • To ensure that approved projects have oversight in accordance with STFC procedures and practice. • To allow STFC the ability to support only work of highest priority and quality. • To enable the group leader in each institution to manage the short and long term fluctuations in effort required within the group.

  3. New projects or major upgrades Applies to new construction project/facility or new UK involvement in an existing project/ facility • Need to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI) • This will be considered and you will be invited (or not) to submit a full application • Full application will be considered by the Projects Peer Review Panel • Recommendation from PPRP to PPAN. • Decision by STFC • No deadlines for SOIs – submit anytime, starting now • Oversight Committees

  4. Project PRD • Development of novel technologies or techniques for specific projects • To place UK scientists in leading positions in future projects • Small scale • Design studies • Pre-construction phases • Industry eligible for funding • Applications to PPRP • Over £500k – SOI first

  5. Exploitation • Exploitation of experiments with existing UK involvement • Standard or rolling grants • Specific experiments – typically short timescale / staff /equipment / travel / consumables for M&O • Coordinate applications from different groups on same experiment • Not major upgrades • Annual Standard Grant Round • Rolling grants all considered together

  6. Infrastructure • Core expertise / Key skills • Engineering, technical, computing support staff • RAs for exploitation of existing experiments • Investigator time • General lab running costs (not project specific equipment) • Normally by rolling grants of 5 year duration • What do we do about the EIT grant?

  7. Theory • Support can be requested by standard or rolling grants • Could have joint theory / experiment grants • No formal ring fencing of funds for theory

  8. Other issues • Project studentships • Visiting fellowships • EIT grant • Studentships and fellowships

  9. Nuclear physics grant panel • Prof M Birse ( Manchester) • Prof A Bruce (Brighton) • Dr D Ireland (Glasgow) • Dr S Freeman (Manchester) • Prof M Freer (Birmingham) • Dr A Murphy (Edinburgh) • Prof B Wadsworth (York) • Prof P Walker (Surrey) • + 1

  10. Timetable • June/July 07 - Meeting of NPGP to plan • August 07 – Guidelines issued to applicants • September/ October 07 – Community meeting to discuss guidelines • 15 November 07 – Deadline for all applications • March / April 08 – NPGP assessment meeting • November 08 – Deadline for standard grants • November 09 – Deadline for standard grants • November 10 – Deadline for rolling and standard grants • PRD/ New projects – To PPRP timetable • - Bridging? Emergencies?
