  4. Struggles with native Americans • Bacon’s Rebellion • Raised own army to attack natives • Ended up marching on Jamestown • Result: convinced many wealthy planters to allow all free men to vote

  5. Puritan new England • Puritans • Church members who wanted to “purify”/reform Church of England • Immigrated to America to escape depression in England’s wool industry

  6. Pilgrims • Landed in Plymouth in 1620 • Were Separatists who fled from England to escape persecution

  7. Massachusetts bay colony • 1630 John Winthrop establish Mass. Bay Colony • Roger Williams challenged “forced religion” • fled to Rhode Island & started own town • Separation of church & state

  8. Settlement of the middle colonies • William Penn & the Quakers establish Pennsylvania • Equality, cooperation, & religions toleration • Dutch establish New Netherlands (New York) but English would take over
