  2. Introduction • The vine narrative • Echo of Isaiah 5 with a twist • Difference is that in Isaiah it is implied that the faithful can leave • John 15 says you do not want to leave

  3. Original Meaning and Intent • Focus on the Greek wordmeno • NAU translates this word as “abide,” verse 4-8 use the word 7 times • Menocan mean: abide, await, continue, endures, lasting, staying, remaining

  4. Original Meaning and Intent • Transliteration – because of the numerous meanings of meno 4 Stay with Me, and I will stay with you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains connected to the vine, so neither canyou unless you continue to stay connected with Me. 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who stays connected to Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 "If anyone does not endure with Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 "If you endure with Me, and My words stay with you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

  6. Prayer 7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (Jn. 15:7 NAU) • It was believed that a desire would guide a disciple’s prayer to serve the Kingdom of Heaven • Wishful prayers for something outside the Kingdom of Heaven were not offered • Disciples wanted to emulate Jesus this way

  7. For us today • Stay connected to Jesus Christ • Forgiveness of sin, God’s love, and grace will abound in you • The way to Heaven is through faith and discipleship to Jesus Christ
