Dragons’ Lair background Dragons’ Lair was first developed in 2010 Partnership Working:- Developed and delivered by Regeneration and Infrastructure Services, Learning and Leisure and Business Gateway Objective:- encourage young people to develop a business idea and find out more about the opportunity of being their own boss. We need young people who are motivated and equipped to grasp new opportunities.

  5. Success of initiative Since 2010 nearly 300 pupils from 24 high schools in North Lanarkshire have attended an information day where information was provided on how to start your own business and how to develop a business plan. Pupils receive first hand experience from local Entrepreneurs Media coverage – Local Newspapers and Times Educational Supplement Positive feedback received from NLC Chief Executive, Executive Director of Learning and Leisure, Chief Executive of Lanarkshire Enterprise Services and Chief Executive of Environmental Services and Elected members. The initiative was also endorsed by Jack Black motivational guru in 2011 In 2012 the NLC Entrepreneurial Initiative was short listed for a corporate award

Business Ideas 2010 • Cosmic – Desktop solar powered vacuum featuring an anti bacterial surface wipe (winner in 2010) • Second sight – Organic light emitting polymer eye piece • Bandshift – Website provider, specifically offering services to small music bands tailoring a website to meet their needs • Hot soles – heated insoles for shoes • Chic Shoes – Detachable high heels • SPPF – Solar panelled portable fridge

Business Ideas 2011 • Grassias - Energy efficient solar powered cordless lawnmower with trimmer attached (Winner in 2011) • Bo Peep – Mobile phone cover with a detection device • Gig It – customised and unique products for storing and transporting instruments • Ozone Host – Environmentally effective web hosting company providing eco friendly hosting solutions and website design • I pocket – Protective detachable cover for I pad • Keasy – Device that attaches to your lock for visually impaired people

Business Ideas 2012 • Thermo Mat – A non-slip mat for the bath tub with colour changing liquids to indicate temp of bath water • T Pad – Triangular in shape and attached to the handle of the supermarket trolley with magnetic drawing screen and pen attached • Easy Wipe – Whiteboard cleaner filled with cleaner fluid at either side and pulled down to wipe the board • Waterproof tablet cover – Waterproof plastic case for mobile phones and tablet devices • Snap – Heart monitor system for using during exercise. Designed as snap strip around the wrist and provides visual feedback on heart rate (Winner 2012). • The Aye Bag – Bag with a detachable compartments for holding PE kit and also has an insulated lunch compartment.

  10. Training and Events 2013 • Information day will take place on 26th September 2013 where pupils from all 24 high schools will be invited to attend. Speakers covering topics such as Intellectual property, social media and developing business plans will attend. • Final event to take place on 17th December 2013, top 6 business ideas will be presented to the panel of Dragons (max of 2 pupils per team). • Both Events will be held in Atrium Business Centre, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge, ML5 4EF

  11. 2013 Key Dates • 26th September – Information day • 28th November 2013 – Applications and Business Plans to be returned (must be e-mailed to address) • 2nd December 2013 – Pupils and schools will be notified if chosen as finalist to pitch their business ideas to Dragons • 5th or 6th December 2013 – Gillian Timmons will visit all finalists to provide feedback from business plans and prepare pupils before pitching to the Dragons • 17th December 2013 – Final Event (1-4.30pm) The Atrium Business Centre, Coatbridge • nlcenterprise@lesl.org Receive an application pack Completed applications to be returned

Prizes 2013 Prizes: • 1st Place – each group member (max of 2) will receive a Sony Vaio laptop for their personal use plus £1000 for school, school will also receive a winning trophy • 2nd Place – each group member (max of 2) will receive an Amazon Kindle fire HD for their personal use plus £500 for school • 3rd Place – each group member will receive £50 Amazon voucher plus £250 for school
