Naturalist • 1850’s movement • Sparked pictorialism • Sharply focused • Simple in composition • Evoked serenity between man and nature • Part of the Industrial Revolution • Built on stylistic trends of painting (realism) • Glorify the working class and rural peasantry, depicting the dignity of the simplest labors, their closeness to nature, and their consequential spiritual health • Captured the natural environment • Peter Henry Emerson: photographed naturalist qualities and solidified naturalism movement

Peter Henry Emerson • Promoted photography as an art • Bought a camera as a tool to go bird watching with • Abandoned his career as a surgeon to become writer and photographer • Influenced by naturalistic French painting • Experimented with soft focus, but was unhappy with the results • Believed photography is an art, not a mechanical reproduction • Believed that photographs should be a true representation of what the eye saw. • Produced photographs with one are of really sharp focus and one are of soft focus. • All of Emerson’s photographs were taken in one shot with no touch up

Alfred Stieglitz • Produced more than 2,500 photographs • Submitted several photographs to amateur photo contests: Annual holiday competition for example • Wrote regularly for The American Amateur Photographer • Bought first hand-held camera in 1892 • "Photography is not an art. Neither is painting, nor sculpture, literature or music. They are only different media for the individual to express his aesthetic feelings… You do not have to be a painter or a sculptor to be an artist. You may be a shoemaker. You may be creative as such. And, if so, you are a greater artist than the majority of the painters whose work is shown in the art galleries of today."
