  16. A. Central Challenge - Section 1 Intent of the Challenge: • To solve this Challenge, the team must design and build Vehicles that will travel to and stop in Scoring Zones, while attempting to avoid the Danger Zone. • The team will try to score the highest possible number of Zone points while also choosing the level of Danger (risk and reward) it wishes to assume. • The team will integrate the Vehicle travel into an original Story about dangers faced by vehicles, told from the point of view of one or more vehicles.

  17. A. Central Challenge – Section 2 2. Vehicles: The team will design and build small Vehicles that will travel from the Start Zone to other Zones on the Site. For the purpose of this Challenge, a Vehicle is a device that can be propelled over a distance. It must be a land Vehicle, traveling on the floor on its way to the scoring Zones. Minor unintentional bouncing or skipping will be allowed, but any Vehicle that is not designed with the intent of traveling on the floor will earn no points for D.1. a. The team will choose how many Vehicles it will use in the Presentation, with a minimum of three (3) Vehicles and a maximum of ten (10) Vehicles allowed. b. Any Vehicle may have the same design, Power Source[s] and construction as another Vehicle, or it may be different. c. Each Vehicle must have a unique and clearly marked number from 1 to 10.No Vehicle will be allowed to leave the Prep Area unless it has a number on it. Vehicle numbers may not be changed or switched between Vehiclesafter leaving the Prep Area.

  18. A. Central Challenge – Section 2 • Each Vehicle, at the time of measurement, must fit within a 6in x 6in x 6in cube or box.Any Vehicle that does not meet this size requirement will earn no points for D.1. i. Vehicles will be measured in the Prep Area prior to the team’s Presentation. At the discretion of the Appraisal Team, Vehicles may be measured a second time at the completion of the team’s Presentation. Any parts or decorations that have accidentally fallen off Vehicles will not be considered to be part of the Vehicle at the end of the Presentation. Vehicles that are designed or engineered to intentionally lose parts during their Zone travel will be treated as oversized vehicles. ii. No additional item(s) may be added to any Vehicle after it has been measured in the Prep Area. Replacement of defective or damaged parts is allowed only for Vehicles that have not yet traveled outside the Start Zone.Replacement parts must be similar to those parts being replaced. Vehicles may not be replaced in their entirety.

  19. A. Central Challenge – Section 2 • Each Vehicle will be propelled by a team-designed Propulsion System[s].Teams must use three or more different types of Power Sources from the following list to propel their Vehicles. Each Vehicle may use one or more than one Propulsion System. The team will select only three types of Power Sources to be considered for their Propulsion System score (D.2.a). i. Wind-up: Vehicle is propelled using energy stored through a tensioned or compressed mechanical system. ii. Pneumatic: Vehicle is propelled using energy from moving or stored gas or air. iii. Gravity: Vehicle is propelled by gravitational force. Vehicles may only be released (no outside forces added). Team members may not push Vehicles. iv. Electric Motor: Vehicle is propelled by a device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. • Hydraulic: Vehicle is propelled by liquid pressure and flow. • Thermal: Vehicle is propelled using temperature change to perform mechanical work. Please refer to the section on Safety in Rules of the Road for more on Team Challenge safety guidelines. • Magnetic: Vehicle is propelled by the attraction or repulsion of objects’ magnetic fields.

  20. A. Central Challenge – Section 2 • Teams will earn points for the Technical Innovation and Technical Design of each of the three selected Propulsion Systems. Teams will also earn points for the Technical Innovation and Technical Design of a team-selected Vehicle.

  21. A. Central Challenge – Section 3 3. Zones: Solid lines shown in the Site figure will be taped. The dashed lines represent the minimum 20ft (6.1m) x 20ft (6.1m) Site size; dashed lines will not be taped. a. The boundaries of Zone 1 extend past the edges of the minimum 20ft (6.1m) x 20ft (6.1m) Site, if the Site provided is larger than the minimum size. Any Vehicle that comes to a stop outside the Start Zone and does not come to a stop in Zone 5, Zone 10 or the Danger Zone will be considered to be in Zone 1. b. A Vehicle must completely leave the Start Zone to receive Zone points. c. Zone points will be awarded in the following manner: i. If a Vehicle is stopped in Zone 1 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 1 point. ii. If a Vehicle is stopped in Zone 5 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 5 points. iii. If a Vehicle is stopped in Zone 10 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 10 points. iv. If a Vehicle is stopped completely in the Danger Zone, the team will earn no Zone points.

  22. A. Central Challenge – Section 3 d. A Vehicle is considered to be in a Zone if any part of the Vehicle is in that Zone. The Vehicle does not need to be touching the ground to be considered in that Zone.Taped lines are considered to be part of the higher point Zone. e. Any Vehicle that stops between two Zones will receive the higher of the two Zone pointsexceptwhen the Vehicle stops between the Start Zone and Zone 1. In this instance, the Vehicle has not completely left the Start Zone and will not receive Zone points (See A.3.b). f. Team members are allowed to be in all Zones on the Site. Team members may not touch the Vehicle once the Vehicle is completely outside the boundaries of the Start Zone. If a Vehicle that is completely outside the Start Zone is touched, it will receive no Zone points (D.1). g. Vehicles that are bumped or moved by another Vehicle will receive the Zone points for their final location at the end of the Presentation. h. Appraisers will evaluate Vehicle locations following the Presentation. Team members must not pick up or move any Vehicles until Appraisers have completed their scoring.

  23. A. Central Challenge – Section 3 e. The Acting Skills (see definition) of the other character(s) and the use of Stagecraft (see definition) must convince the Appraisers and the audience that there is an Invisible Visitor present in the Story. f. The team will earn points for the Acting Skills used during the Presentation when a character or characters interact with the Invisible Visitor. The team will also earn points for the effective use of Stagecraft in the portrayal of the Invisible Visitor. g. Just as the wind sets something in motion, so too does the Invisible Visitor. The motion caused by the Invisible Visitor could be anything from a new development in the storyline to a change in attitude or an action by one of the other actors. The team will earn points for the creativity of the motion and its effect on the Story.

  24. A. Central Challenge – Section 3

  25. A. Central Challenge – Section 4 4. The Kinetic Art: This type of art is all about motion. It contains moving parts that create its effect. Your team must combine the science of Wind Energy with art to create Kinetic Art (see definition) and integrate it into the Story. a. Only energy from the Wind will cause the Kinetic Art to begin moving. b. The team must provide their own way to create the necessary Wind to start the Kinetic Art. The team is advised to refer to Rules of the Road regarding safety. The team will earn points for the successful use of Wind Energy to start the motion of the Kinetic Art. c. Once the movement of the Kinetic Art has been started by the Wind, some part(s) of it must stay in motion for at least 15 consecutive seconds during the Presentation. The Kinetic Art must not use electrical or battery power that is a part of the Art to create or keep it in motion. A team member should signal an Appraiser that the scored requirement of motion is ready to begin; otherwise, the Appraiser may miss the beginning of the motion. The team will be allowed to make as many attempts as necessary to complete the required 15 seconds of motion. Teams will earn points for successful motion for 15 continuous seconds.

  26. A. Central Challenge – Section 4 d. The Kinetic Art must be integrated into the Story. This means that it has a meaningful connection to the Story. The team will earn points for the integration of the Kinetic Art into the Story. e. The Kinetic Art must not be the Invisible Visitor. (See A.3) f. The team will earn points for the quality of the appearance and workmanship involved in the construction of the Kinetic Art. This score includes all and any visual effects of the Kinetic Art’s motion. g. The team will earn points for the Technical Design (see definition) and for the Technical Innovation (see definition) of the Kinetic Art. Scores for Technical Innovation of the Kinetic Art will be based on the methods actually used during the Presentation.

  27. A. Central Challenge – Section 4 • Travel: Teams must release their Vehicles one at a time from any location within the Start Zone. Team members must not push or directly provide the propulsion needed for travel. All Vehicles must leave the Start Zone and travel using one or more Power Sources from the list provided in A.2.e.Vehicles that do not meet the travel requirements outlined here will earn no Zone points (D.1). • Team members may release their Vehicles in any order. • Vehicles must begin their travel from completely within the Start Zone. • Teams must not release any Vehicle until the previously released Vehicle is entirely out of the Start Zone. Vehicles released when a previously released Vehicle is still in the Start Zone will earn no Zone points. • Vehicles cannot be attached to each other in any manner as they leave the Start Zone. • External guidance that is entirely contained within the Start Zone is allowed. • Vehicles must travel freely after leaving the Start Zone. No tracks, tunnels or other means that direct the Vehicles may be used outside the Start Zone. Anything needed to propel or direct the Vehicles must remain in the Start Zone or be on the Vehicles. TEAMS MAY NOT USE TEAM-CONTROLLED EXTERNAL DEVICES SUCH AS ELECTRONIC OR MECHANICAL REMOTE CONTROLS TO DIRECT THE MOTION OF THE VEHICLES. • Traveling Vehicles are allowed to touch other Vehicles that have been released for score. Teams are not permitted to use barriers, walls, props or other items on the Site, intentionally or unintentionally, to physically assist the stopping or directing of any Vehicle. A Vehicle will earn no Zone points (D.1) if it touches anything other than another Vehicle and the tournament-provided floor during its travel.

  28. A. Central Challenge – Section 4 • Teams will earn points for the Technical Design and Innovation of the methods used by the Vehicles to travel accurately and to stop by themselves.

  29. A. Central Challenge – Section 5 • Danger Points: This Challenge includes a Danger Points decision that will require strategic planning and quick thinking for teams to be successful. While in the Launch Area, teams will randomly draw the number of one of their Vehicles. All teams will have one minute to make their Danger Points decision after the number is drawn. The team’s decision will be based on the following information: • The team may choose not to accept any level of Danger. In this case, no Danger Points will be added or deducted. • The team may choose to accept the Danger. Points will be awarded in the following manner: • If the randomly selected Vehicle is stopped in Zone 1 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 10 extra Danger Points. • If the randomly selected Vehicle is stopped in Zone 5 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 25 extra Danger Points. • If the randomly selected Vehicle is stopped in Zone 10 at the end of the Presentation, the team will earn 50 extra Danger Points. • The team will lose 25 Danger Points if the randomly selected Vehicle does any one of the following: • i. Is stopped completely in the Danger Zone at the end of the Presentation. • ii. Touches any team members or objects except for other Vehicles as it travels. • iii. Is released prior to the previously-released Vehicle completely leaving the Start Zone.

  30. A. Central Challenge – Section 6 • Story: Imagine you are a vehicle. Crowded highways, inattentive drivers, road construction or heavy loads can mean daily danger as you go about your business. Split-second decisions can result in either a safe trip to your destination or they can result in accidents or detours. • The team will earn points for the creativity and originality of a team-created Story about a dangerous situation told from the point of view of one or more vehicles that are involved in it. • The team will earn points for integrating the team’s Vehicle travel into the Story. • The team will earn points for the theatrical effect of the characterization of a vehicle[s] by one or more team members. This characterization may involve appearance, mannerisms, dialogue or other methods as chosen by the team.

  31. B. Team Choice Elements B. In addition to the above requirements, the team must present TWO creations called “Team Choice Elements” that show off their interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. The team may create anything they wish for Team Choice Elements including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical actions etc. 1. The team must present both Team Choice Elements as part of the eight-minute Presentation and each Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to the team’s Central Challenge solution. Each Team Choice Element must be described briefly on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge.

  32. B. Team Choice Elements 2. A Team Choice Element may not be a specific item that is required in the Central Challenge that is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identified and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road. 3. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for the Creativity and Originality of the Team Choice Element, and for the Quality, Workmanship, or Effort that is evident and Integration into the Presentation. Evaluation of Team Choice Elements is subjective.

  33. D. Presentation Site – Section 1.Floor surface: Destination ImagiNation strongly suggests that the Presentation Site be a large space with a hard floor such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very short-napped carpet.Teams should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces.
