RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS IN TURKEY • Althoughwedon’tcelebrate Noel ,wemuslimshavetworeligiousfestivalscelebrated on differentdayseveryyear,generally ten daysearlierthantheyeartheywerecelebratedbefore.Thereasonforthis is thatthesefestivalsarecalculatedaccordingtolunarcalendar.Wealsootherreligiousdays but theyare not considered as feast but as daysornightsduringwhichpeople say theirprayers .

One of thesefestivals is theRamadan Festival orFeast.Itlastsforthreeand a halfdays.Halfday is TheEve,duringwhichpeople do a verythroughcleaning,someshopping.Familiesusually buy newclothesforthemselvesandtheirchildren. One of the main characterisitics of thesereligiousfestivals is thatpeoplevisiteacherother ,theirfriendsandtheirneighbours.Turkishdelight,baklava,kadayıf • orotherkind of Turkishsweets • areserved

  4. Ifsmallchildrenvisittheoldones ,theykisstheirhandsandtheygettheirbestwishesandblessingsfortheirfuture life andaregrantedmoneyor a handkerchieffull of candiesandsmallpresents.Grandparentssometimesgivetheirgrandchildrensmallgoldornamentsdepending on theirfinancialstatus.

Ramadan Hoilday is different from the feastof sacrifice.It comes after the fasting month ,during which people don’t eat nor drink anything from sunrise to sunset.Just before the Ramadan holiday begins ,people give money to the poor:The amount of the money is calculated every year by the Ministryof Religious Affairs that’s why Ramadan month is called The Month of Sharing and Affection’Some men go to mosques early in the morning

During the Feast of the Sacrifice ,not only candies but also the meat of sacrificial animal are served to guests . ln some regions of Turkey rams are washed, painted with henna and are dressed up with bridal ribbons. Afterthe ram is sacrificied,familiesandrelativesandsometimesneighboursgathertogethertohavelunchpreparedbythemeat of thesacrificiedanimal.One-third of the meat from the sacrificed animals is left in the house. The other parts are given to relatives neighbors and the poor. Both during Ramadan and the Feast of the Sacrifice people come together, celebrate and entertain each other.
