Safe Machine Parameters (SMP) and Safe Beam Flag (SBF) Generators and Detectors

The SMP system generates and distributes parameters required for safe operation of the LHC and SPS. The SMP controller ensures data dependability and redundancy. The SBF system generates flags to indicate safe beam operation. For more information and schematics, refer to section #6 of the provided folder.

  2. Summary • Safe Machine Parameters (SMP) • Safe Beam Flag (SBF) Generators and Detectors

  3. SAFE MACHINE PARAMETERS System (SMP) Generators and Detectors

  4. Purpose of the SMP System • For safe operation of the LHC and SPS, several systems require parameters that must be generated and distributed around the accelerator complexes with very high reliability. • Modular solution adopted. Dedicated card for each main function of the SMP. Generators and Detectors

  5. SMP Controller: Basic Function The basic function of the SMP controller… Safe Machine Parameters System

  6. Functional Description The first step is to accommodate multiple data sources to increase dependability… Safe Machine Parameters System

  7. Functional Description Then duplicate the critical processes Safe Machine Parameters System

  8. Functional Description The transmitter must then arbitrate the data from the two sources Safe Machine Parameters System

  9. Functional Description • General Machine Timing (GMT) output is feed into the timing network that: • Queues and distribute all packets • Watchdog protection can issue a SBF to FALSE Safe Machine Parameters System

  10. Functional Description Finally the output GMT must be cross-checked with the original data Safe Machine Parameters System

  11. Hardware Implementation Generators and Detectors

  12. SAFE BEAM FLAG (SBF) Generators and Detectors

  13. SBF - Definitions • Definition : • TRUE LHC operates with beam BELOW damage threshold. • FALSE LHC operates with beam ABOVE damage threshold. (There is one SBF for each beam: SBF1 ; SBF2 ) • Generation : • Inputs : Energy (E) ; Intensity (I); Thresholds for each beam (SBI_TH) • If ( I · E < SBI_ TH ) then SBF = TRUE ; else SBF = FALSE Generators and Detectors

  14. SBF - Definitions • Users of the SBF: • BIS : IF SBF = TRUE and a special mask for a user is SET Beam operation is allowed • Injection Interlock System: IF SBF = TRUE No injection of High Intensity beam into LHC is permitted. • The flag is forced to FALSE for 2-3 s. to allow high intensity injections • Aperture kickers: IF SBF = TRUE Operation of kickers allowed. • Collimators and beam absorbers: • Default value: • SBF = FALSE Generators and Detectors

  15. SMP/SBF – Additional Information • You can find all detailed schematics, pcb layouts, electrical characteristics and functional description about the SMP and the SBF in section #6 of the folder provided. Generators and Detectors
