  15. Train the Brain 1. Name at least 5 ingredients of prenatal+DHADenk and explain the positive effects for mother/baby! • Folic acid 400 → essential for the baby’s healthy neural tube development, blood formation, healthy placenta and umbilical cor • DHA(docosahexaenoic acid) 200 mg → essential for the brain and eye developmentofthefetusandthegrowingbaby • Vitamin C → importantfor a healthy immune systemofthemother • Pantothenicacid→ mental performanceandreductionoftiredness • Vitamin B2 and B6 helpproducefunctionalredbloodcells

  16. 6. FolicAcid “In the U.S. approximately 2,500 infants are born with a neural tube defect each year. About half of these cases are thought to be related to inadequate folic acid intake by the mother.“ • Neural tube defects are common birth defects which include: • 1) SPINA BIFIDA • The vertebrae surrounding the spinal cord does not close properly during • the first 28 days after fertitilization => Spinal cord is exposed • A majority of babies born with this condition grow to adulthood with • various degrees of disability (paralysis, inability to control bowel • and bladder bodily function). • 2) ANENCEPHALY • Anencephaly is a condition in which most or all of the brain is absent. • Infants with this condition die shortly after birth For thisreason, Denk Pharmadevelopedprenatal Denk with 800 µg folicacid for womenplanning a pregnancyand for thefirst 12 weeksofpregnancy

  17. 6.1 FolicAcidrecommendation • Neural tube formation is already complete (28 days after conception) • However: it is recommended to continue taking folic after the 12th • week of pregnancy and during lactation “Patients with no personal health risks, planned pregnancy and good compliance ...require a daily supplementation with folic acid (0.4-1.0 mg) for at least 2-3 months before conception and throughout pregnancyand the postpartum period (4-6 weeks and as long as breastfeeding continues)” • Recommendation from: Society of Obstetricians • And Gynaecologist of Canada, updated clinical guidelines • On pre-conceptional vitamin/folic acid supplementation, 2007

  18. 6.2 Functionoffolicacid Folicacidis a B-vitamin withimportantfunctions in thehuman‘sbody: Essential role of folic acid in other physiological functions • DNA synthesis, DNA repair, DNA methylation • Co-factor in biological reactions • Cell division and growth • Production of red blood cells  Prevention of anaemia • Essential for brain functions (mental and emotional health) Other risks linked to folic acid deficiency • Higher risks of heart attacks and stroke • Higher risk of some cancers (e.g. stomach cancer) • Cell division and growth • Considerable decrease in male sperm count and fertility • Higher risk of developing clinical depression

  19. 6.3 Folicacid infoods U.S. Department ofHealth & Human Services and FDA recommend 400 µg folicacidforall women in childbearing age1, 2. • Humans cannot synthesize folate “de novo” • Special foods help obtain the recommended amount of • folic acid • Leafy, dark green vegetables • Citrus fruits and juices, berries • Legumes (dried beans and peas) • Whole grains, breakfast cereals • Rice, pasta Excessive cooking can remove or destroy folate contained in food (Folic acid is heat labile!) …

  20. 6.3 Folic acid in foods • Synthetic folic acid is better absorbed than folate from foods • (50% lower bioavailability of food folate compared with folic acid from supplement; 1 µg food folate= 0.5 µg supplement folic acid) • Even if a woman keeps to a well balanced diet, she may not get • the extra folic acid she needs to prevent birth defects • An additional folate intake during lactation is necessary to replace folate secreted in human milk and to maintain folate status

  21. Train the Brain 2. How many pregnancies are affected by neural tube defects every year in the U.S.? • Approximately 2500 pregnancies are affected by neural tube defects every year in the U.S.

  22. 7. What is DHA? • What is DHA? • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important omega -3 fatty acid • Natural sources of DHA • Seafood (salmon, sardines, shrimps) • Role of DHA • DHA is a major structural fat in the human brain and eye • Important for foetal development of the brain and retina during the third trimester and up to 18 months after birth • ->A daily amount of 200 mg DHA is recommended by several guidelines (World Association of Perinatal Medicine, European Food Safety Authority, German Nutrition Society)

  23. 7.1 DHA during pregnancy • The DHA source of the baby is the MOTHER • DHA is ultimately derived from the mother by placental • transfer and later by lactation • The delivery of DHA to the foetus/child is dependent on the • DHA level of the mother • -> Fish consumption may contain mercury contamination and • should therefore be limited to 2 seafood servings a week Most pregnant women do not get enough DHA A daily amount of 200 mg DHA is recommended by several guidelines (World Association of Perinatal Medicine, European Food Safety Authority, German Nutrition Society)1-3

  24. Train the Brain • DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid and very important for the fetus and growing baby brain and eye development. • While breastfeeding, DHA can be passed to the baby through breastmilk. 3. Why is DHA important to the foetus and newborn baby?

  25. 8. Vitamin D during breastfeeding • What is vitamin D? • Vitamin D is a nutrient found in animal based foods and made by human skin when exposed to sunlight • Vitamin D is needed for health and to maintain strong bones -> It helps the bodyabsorb calciumfrom food and supplements • Why is vitamin D so important? • Human breastmilk is a poor source of vitamin D • A vitamin D deficiency can cause soft, thin, and brittle bones, a condition known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults • Getting the right nutrients and eating well during breastfeedingis important for the baby’s growth and development • Depending on the vitamin D status of the breastfeeding mother, the breast milk may or may not provide vitamin D for the baby • What is the recommendation for a breastfeeding mother? • The German Nutrition Society recommends 800 I.E./20 µg vitamin D during breastfeeding • An additional vitamin D supplement to the baby every day as well is recommended
