  1. One Man’s Story…

  2. The Nature of Movements “Movements are characterized by discontent, vision and action. Discontent unfreezes people from their commitment to the way things are. Movements emerge when people feel something needs to change. If the vacuum created by discontent is filled with a vision of a different future and action to bring change, then a movement is born. Movements change people, and changed people changed the world.” - Steve Addison in Movements that Change the World

  3. Jesus came to start a movement! Mark 3:13-16a13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them outto preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed. • Designated them “apostles” • Our equivalent is missionary which comes from Latin missio) • “One who is sent”

  4. Jesus came to start a movement! John 20:21-22 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. • Intimate connection between the Spirit and empowerment for the mission

  5. Jesus came to start a movement! Acts 1:6-86 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”  7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  6. Jesus came to start a movement! Matthew 28:18-2018 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  7. Acts is a narrative of a movement! Acts 1:1-21 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.” • Established contact with non-believers • Proclaimed the good news that Jesus is both Lord & Savior • Led people to put their faith in Jesus • Equipped disciples to form new churches

  8. The New Testament is a movement document! Romans 15:7-9a7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed 9 and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.

  9. The New Testament is a movement document! 1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

  10. The New Testament is a movement document! 2 Corinthians 5:17-2017 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

  11. The New Testament is a movement document! Philippians 1:3-6 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

  12. The real story of history is the advance of the gospel into enemy territory! 2 Corinthians 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

  13. The real story of history is the advance of the gospel into enemy territory! 2 Corinthians 10:3-53For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

  14. The real story of history is the advance of the gospel into enemy territory! Matthew 16:15-1815 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”  17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

  15. The real story of history is the advance of the gospel into enemy territory! “The earth is blinded by an occupying army of fallen angelic powers, and the kingdom of God is a liberation army advancing the frontiers of light until all the earth is full of the knowledge of God. Just as in any battle, the boundary lines shift constantly as territory is won and lost. . . The most important battleground is the hearts of men.” -Richard Lovelace in Dynamics of Spiritual Life

The most important battleground is the hearts of men.” -Richard Lovelace in Dynamics of Spiritual Life • “Hell is a conspiracy, and the first requirement of a conspiracy is that it remain underground.” • -Richard Lovelace in Dynamics of Spiritual Life

  17. You already are part of a movement… “A movement is like a river. It is constantly changing in response to new challenges yet it has one purpose – to get to the ocean.” -Steve Addison in Movements that Change the World
