  1. Scoliosis Everything you need to know about this condition.

  2. Scoliosis? Scoliosis is the curving of the spine. Instead of being straight the spine is twisted or curved. A rib hump is also a sign of scoliosis.(Shown when I bend over) Scoliosis (from Greek: skoliōsis meaning from skolios, "crooked") is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side.

  3. Treatment There are many treatment options for scoliosis including bracing and surgery. The next slides will teach you about this……

  4. Risser Scale The lower the Risser grade at the time of curve detection, the greater the risk of progression. The Risser scale differs between genders and among boys.

  5. Bracing Bracing is the option most scoliosis patients have to face. There are many kinds of braces including Milwaukie, Boston, Charleston bending, and Providence Night braces. I wear a Providence Night Brace (it’s blue) Bracing is usually used with 20-40* curves.

  6. Surgery Surgery is the last resort to most doctors and patients. The surgery consists of a spinal fusion with instrumentation. The most common types of fusion are Posterior and Anterior. Posterior Spinal Fusion is when the doctors cut a scar down your back and fuse your spine to metal to straighten it out. Anterior is a cut in your side resulting in only a few vertebra to be fused. The spinal fusion is most often used with curves of 50* of more.

  7. The Odds • One in every forty people have scoliosis. This is usually a small curve of 5* or less. • There is a 2-3 in 100 chance you will need a brace. • One in every 1000 people need surgery. • There are many people that do not know they have scoliosis.

  8. My Story Here is my scoliosis story: The diagnosesI was diagnosed with scoliosis in May of 2010. I went to a annual checkup when my doctor had me bend over and found that I had a small curve. Later that day I went to the hospital for x-rays. At this point in time I was totally clueless on what would happen next. I went to Dr. Henderson about a week later. He basically repeated that if it got to 40* I would need surgery. My pediatrician was more knowledgeable than him on what to do about my curve. Then I went to see Dr. Spatz she was much more knowledgeable. She said that I had a 15* curve. If it got to 20* I would have to get a night brace. She said to come back in a month. The Next AppointmentA month later I went back to Dr. Spatz my curve was at exactly 20*. She informed me I would need a providence night brace. The fittingI then went to my brace guy, Dr. Johnson. I went through the plaster experience and then went back to school. I went to get my brace three weeks later. The braceMr. Johnson had me try on the brace. At the time I could barely breathe in it. He then shaved it down to make it smaller. I then took the brace home dreading the night to come. The First NightI slept for about an hour and a half the first night. I woke up almost screaming in pain. The next monthThe next month I was doing very well in the brace. ( other than the first night I never had to take it off)The one month appointmentI went back to doctor Spatz for my one month appointment. In the curve my brace is now 0*. I was so excited that the brace was working.A few tips1) Always wear your brace if you don't the consequences could be much worse.2) Name your brace it helps so you don't have to have your mom name it for you. (I did and it was a huge mistake.)3) If anyone bullies you about it ignore them and walk away.
