The people who lived there were Aborigenes who arrived in Australia over 50,000 years ago. There are only about 400,000 Aborigenes today in a population of just 20 million. • The English arrived at the end of the 18th century. At first, Britain sent prisoners to Australia, beacuse the prisons were full in Britain. Then other people went too. These were mostly farmers. Then after 1850, people went there to look for gold. In the 20th century Australia needed people with skills, and in the 1960s a lot of Europeanworkers went there.
