  1. Speciation How do new species evolve?

  2. Background • What is the definition of a species? • a group of individuals thatproduce fertile, viable offspring,in nature. Even though these smiley face spiders look different they are the same species. (Variation in species)

  3. Definition • Speciation: • an event that produces two or more separate species

  4. New Species

  5. How does speciation happen? • 1. A species of animal lives along the coast • 2. Disaster strikes (hurricane) and one part of the group is blown to an island off the coast. They are too far apart for interbreeding to occur • 3. The island has a slightly different environment so the pressures for survival differ • 4. A new species develops • 5. If by chance this new species comes back to the main land the 2 species will not be able to mate

  6. Galapagos

  7. What causes speciation? • 1. Geographic isolation: rivers, mountains, canyons, continental drift, migration A river develops and separates the two groups

  8. Other types of speciation • And there are more types

  9. Quiz : for your summary • Can you define species? • Can you define speciation? • Can you define geographic isolation? • Can you give an example of how a new species comes into existence?
