First Grade Room 4 Mrs. Lewis. Welcome Back. About Mrs. Lewis. This is my tenth year as a teacher at Monterey Heights (9 years in First, 1 year in K) Attended SDSU on a softball scholarship and received a B.A. in Psychology. Received my Masters of Education in Cross-Cultural teaching.

About Mrs. Lewis • This is my tenth year as a teacher at Monterey Heights (9 years in First, 1 year in K) • Attended SDSU on a softball scholarship and received a B.A. in Psychology. • Received my Masters of Education in Cross-Cultural teaching. • I love reading, going to the beach, and being with my family!

  3. Getting Started • Please send your child to school everyday on time. Attendance is important! • Please send your child to school rested and ready to learn. • Running Club starts at 7:50am • Free Breakfast in class 8:15-8:30 am • Fridays are the Peace Circle, meet on the black top

  4. Room 4’s Rules • Be Safe • Be Responsible • Be Respectful

  5. Discipline Policy - Keep it Green • Purple,Gray,Light Blue-Wow, Great Day!!! • Green Card - Good Citizen • Yellow Card – Warning • Orange Card-Loses 5 minutes on the play structure at recess • Red Card - Student will fill chart red and parent notified! Loss of privilege, does not participate in Fun Friday Children should not be protected from consequences. Those consequences may be the most valuable lesson of the day.

  6. Homework Policy • Envision Math Homework: Monday-Thursday. • Reading Book Bags will be sent home Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. This should take about 15-20 minutes. Please send book bags every day to school. • Math Facts Test every Wednesday. • Spelling Test every Friday.

  7. Health and Wellness • Breakfast is free • If you choose to, please send students to school with a healthy food choice for morning recess. • Lunch is not free. Please fill out lunch form if you qualify for a free or reduced lunch.

  8. Reading Standards • Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension Development • Able to pass a Reading Level 16 • Read/Spell Sight Words

  9. Writing Standards • Descriptive, Personal Narrative • Organization and Focus • Penmanship-neatness counts • Edit and Revise • Spelling word wall words correctly (inventive spelling is encouraged) • Try to score a 3 or 4

  10. Math Standards • Add/Subtract Math Facts to 20. • Measurement & Geometry • Time • Patterns and Relationships • Problem Solving/Mathematical Reasoning

  11. Physical Fitness • To improve cardiovascular system • To keep our children physically fit • To teach our children how valuable our bodies are • To teach team work • Mondays and Wednesdays are team sports and individual skills (SPARKS) • Tuesday/Thursday is Run/Walk Day • Friday is Friday Fun day an earned activity (Freeze Dance)

  21. Reading Standards in K Read independently at a level 3 with fluency at 95% or higher accuracy. Recognize and name all upper and lower case letters—out of order. Match all sounds to the appropriate letter. Read and write at least 15 of the 27 high frequency words correctly.

  22. Math Standards in K • Count 30 objects. • Recognize, out of order, numbers 0-30. • Be able to make patterns: ABAB, AAB, ABC. • Be able to sort objects into groups. • Understand math vocabulary: shorter, taller, heavier, etc. • Tell time to the hour. Name the days of the week in order. • Add and subtract using counters. • Name and recognize shapes.

  23. Writing Standards in K • Write 2 simple sentences spelling high frequency words correctly and writing dominant sounds of unknown words. • Write 48-52 upper and lowercase letters legibly.
