Introduction (1) • Keeping pace with the rapid evolution of information technology and the increasing number of its possible applications is extremely difficult • Information technology offers many opportunities for parliaments to fulfill their role more effectively and meet the increased expectations of the electorate.
In this presentation I will give a short overview about: The Information Analysis Department (IAD) Electronic services provided by IAD Internal web side of IAD Future plans and challenges Introduction (2)
Information Analysis Department • The IAD is an independent division of the Seimas Office directly accountable to the Secretary General • The main task is to provide Seimas information users with information and research necessary to carry out their functions • Services vary from traditional library services to media monitoring, information analysis and research.
Structure of IAD • Research Units • Law and Politic • Economic and Social Policy • Parliamentary Research • EU Research • Regional Security and Euro – Atlantic Integration • Quick Reference Unit • Reference Library
Services provided (1) • Research units provide research, analysis and information on a wide range of legislative, policy and constituency issues • Research specialists reply to individual research requests, produce research papers and comparative studies.
Services provided (2) • The Reference Library provides • Lending services • Acquisition and bibliographic services • Indexing (electronic catalogue) • Press clipping service (press articles arranged by topic) • Database search • Fact - finding
Services provided (3) • Quick reference unit provides reference service and media monitoring from press, radio, television, Internet. • Publications: • Surveys of the news agencies, Lithuanian and foreign newspapers and Internet websites • Summaries of the Lithuanian TV news • Issue Briefs (concise briefing papers on issues considered of major importance to the Seimas, hot topics)
Electronic Information Services (1) • Internal web site of the IAD ( almost all information prepared by the IAD or received from other sources is accessible through the web site) • Library’s online catalogue • Internal online databases
Electronic Information Services (2) • External databases (e.g. Factiva, Westlaw International, EBSCO, Oxford Reference Online) • News agencies (ELTA, BNS, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Interfax, BelaPan)
