Different Kinds of FRQ’s • Take a position – assess the validity of a statement • Compare and Contrast • Cause and Effect – may be simple with one of each or complex with multiple causes and effects • Change over time – if the dates are very specific (1776 instead of 1770’s) then they are looking for a specific event to set it off

Most Important Aspects of the Essay • THESIS • Must be arguable • Needs to be in an introductory paragraph, not the only sentence • EX: Both MLK and Malcolm X aimed to gain rights for African Americans and change the racially based social norms. However, MLK focused on integration and legal equality through nonviolence while Malcolm X wanted separation and African American self-reliance through violence if necessary. Therefore, the two leaders’ goals and strategies during the civil rights movement were very different. (C/C) • EX: The Articles of Confederation created a well organized system for dealing with newly acquired territories and providing a financial means to increase needed revenue. However, it established a loose confederation of states that lacked a sense of national unity, it created internal gridlock that failed to establish a system of checks and balances, and it created a government that did not have the powers to conduct basic governmental business. Therefore, the Articles of Confederation was not effective in solving many of the problems face by the newly formed United States. (Take a position)

Most Important Aspects • EVIDENCE • Specific pieces of historical information – names, places, events, writings, dates if you know them. • The more, the better! • Lots of incorrect information – will hurt your score • Analysis • How does the evidence support your argument (this is why you need an argument!)

  5. Comparing APUSH and WHAP FRQ’s • Similarities • Need specific historical facts • Need an arguable thesis • Differences • Check-list grading vs. holistic grading • Internal vs. external choice • Time (40 vs. 35 min)
