The Year of the Gun: 1968 • Poland – University students protested strict censorship and limits on open political discussion imposed by the Soviets . • Czechoslovakia – Leader Alexander Dubcek announced democratic reforms would be allowed = Soviets crush his government in the “Prague Spring” 8/1968. • France – Students in Paris protest the Vietnam war which led to protests against the university system in France, almost led to the overthrow of the gov’t. • New York – Black students and SDS protest Columbia University’s plan to build on park land in Harlem = protesters storm university, hold it for 5 days in the “Battle of Morningside Heights”.
