  1. Centre for Advancement of Computational SciencesA Portal for Intuition-based Learning Prof V.Chandrasekaran Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Sri Sathya Sai University

  2. Dedicated to …

  3. Agenda • Background • Intuition-based Learning • Why Computational Sciences? • Proposal and its Uniqueness • Plan of Action • Budget requirements • Conclusion

  4. Background – SSSU’s Vision • SSSU’s Vision and its alignment to National mission : • Established not for merely earning degrees, but for LIFE • Emphasis on giving and forgiving • Responsibilities Vs rights of youth • NAAC A++ Accreditation – Crest Jewel in University Education

  5. SRI SATHYA SAI UNIVERSITY’s Contribution to Society • SSSU’s Unique achievement • FREE education with emphasis on developing citizens of good character founded on moral and ethical values. • Balanced Development in all spheres of LIFE • Service to Society is an integral part of SSSU Education – Grama Seva • Development of Self-Confidence as the foundation, Self-satisfaction, Self-Sacrifice, and Self- Realization as higher goals among students.

  6. Research Publications Conferences Transformed Individual Values Competence Attitude Knowledge Base Benefit to Society Academics Character Co-curricular Activities UGC/AICTE Regulations Spiritual Training Holistic Curricula Experiential Learning Infrastructure Committed Competent Faculty Inspiring Role Models EDUCARE - INTEGRAL EDUCATION SYSTEM Evaluation Ambience Feedback

  7. Intuition-Based Learning Strategy • Different levels and shades of learning – Information to Transformation • Learning Materials to “DEVELOP INTUITION” • Requires test-beds for trying out ideas as one would do in Lab • EnablesInnovation through Intuition • Provides a healthy platform for young scientists

  8. Computational Sciences

  9. Computational Sciences

  10. Why Computational Sciences? • Relevance of Computational Sciences and its perceived impact on the Society. • New growing discipline in its own right • Harnesses power of computing to solve real-world problems • New paradigm of inter-disciplinary research and educational development. • Complexity of nature as revealed by Science requires much deeper understanding • Many societal applications require a multi-disciplinary approach. – Drug design, Weather forecasting, Epidemic modeling, precision agriculture. • Enhances better understanding of all sciences

  11. Why Computational Sciences? • SSSU’s vision is to take research to greater heights via inter-disciplinary research in computational sciences, thus providing a platform for holistic development of all disciplines

  12. Why Computational Sciences? • Current research scenario is purely based on commercial and self-interests • Need to foster the self-sustaining cycle of Research –> Content/Tools development –> Test bed provision -> Intuition-based learning by ALL ->Research - >……. Result: AN INNOVATING NATION !

  13. Contribution of DMACS in Computational Sciences MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING • Automated screening of patients with Diabetic Retinopathy • Minimal residual disease evaluation for children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia • Cataract grading system for screening of patients

  14. Contribution of DMACS in Computational Sciences • High Performance Computing • Computational Intelligence • Robotics And Machine Learning • Image Mosaicing of Aerial Images For DRDO • Information Security, and Forensics • Intelligent Data Mining • Text to Speech for Visually Challenged

  15. Computational Science in Other Departments Of SSSU • Computational Modeling in BIOINFORMATICS • Computational Electro-dynamics of Nano-optics • Computational Chemistry in study of bio-macro molecules and their interactions with drug molecules • Computational Modeling in Finance

  16. Proposal and its Uniqueness • Proposal Overview • Enhancing the current research activities at SSSU through infrastructure enhancement • Inducting appropriate expertise through careful selection process to intensify research, content and tools development • Offering new courses, seminars, workshops, web-enabled test-beds and mentoring which will lead to quality content generation.

  17. Proposal and its Uniqueness • Unique Contribution: • High quality educational materials based on original research in a multi-disciplinary area which are otherwise not available. • Web-enablement of simulation and learning tools as test-beds to facilitate intuition-based learning by aspiring students, thus providing a healthy learning cycle. • Eg: Tornado simulation

  18. Plan of Action • Phase I - two years • consolidate the research already in progress • commence the establishment of necessary infrastructure • initiate resource acquisition process • begin content development work.

  19. Plan of Action • Phase II – two years • introduce a new curriculum in M.S in computational sciences • intensify research • deliver content together with web enabled tools

  20. Plan of Action • Phase III – one year • select a few themes of computational sciences, at least one from each discipline • identify through pilot trials focused research projects that can be adopted in future for societal benefit.

  21. Budget Layout • Infrastructure • Building Rs 250 lakhs • Computing Facilities Rs 210 lakhs • Networks, PCs, thin clients Rs 182 lakhs • Staff (5 years) Rs 283 lakhs • Other Recurring Expenses Rs 175 lakhs • TOTAL Rs 11.0 Crores over 5 years. Budget breakdown for CACS

  22. Conclusion • Our proposal envisages delivery of quality learning material and tools • Provides a portal for Intuition-based Learning • The model will be easily replicable to other research domains

  23. Any Questions?
