  2. Early Life • Greg Mortenson was born on December 27, 1957 • He lived his childhood near Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, from 1958 to 1973. • His father founded Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center and his mother founded the International School Moshi. • From 1977-1979 he served in the U.S. Army in Germany, he received the Army Commendation Medal. • He also graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1983.

Greg and his sister Christa • In July 1992, Christa Mortenson died of a seizure. • In 1993, Mortenson decided to climb the mountain K2 in his sister’s memory. • He spent over 70 days on the mountain and also had to perform the rescue of a climber that took close to 75 hours. • He found himself in the village Korphe after he failed to summit K2.

  4. Greg’s Humanitarian Movements • Greg was drawn to the Korphe people when he saw them. • He discovered children sitting outside without a school and decided he wanted to make a difference. • To date Greg has built around 80 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, mostly for girls. • Because of him thousands of children got an education. • He is also the founder of Pennies for Peace.

Awards and Nominations • On the Independence Day of Pakistan on August 14, 2008, the government announced Greg would receive the highest civilian award, the Sitara-e-Pakistan, which means the star of Pakistan. • Mortenson was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 and 2010. • Mortenson was featured as one of America’s Top Twenty Leaders in November 2009 in the U.S. News and World Report Magazine. • Greg has won 13 awards in 2010 and 33 awards in past years. He has made 8 national television appearances since November 2007.

  6. Greg Mortenson Today • Greg is married to Tara Bishop and has two children named Amira and Khyber Mortenson. • His mother is currently living in Alaska. • Greg still continues to be a growing factor in Pakistan’s education, helping them become more peaceful with learning.
