  2. What are nouns? Nouns are: • people – Freddie, dancer, teacher, boy • places –Paine Intermediate School, school, store, closet • things – ball, desk, socks, bags, pencil, computer • ideas – beauty, honesty, love, sadness

  3. Common Nouns and Proper Nouns • Common nouns are not specific, and they do not need a capital letter. • Proper nouns are specific, and they must always be capitalized. Examples: girl, dog, month, school, planet Examples: Sarah, Terrier, January, Paine Intermediate School, Jupiter

  4. Write a proper noun for each common noun. city state ocean zoo state president book street

  5. Singular Nouns and Plural Nouns Singular nouns name ONE person, place, or thing. Plural nouns name TWO OR MORE people, places, or things. Examples: girl, lady, boy, foot, deer Examples: girls, ladies, boys, feet, deer

  6. Rules for writing plural nouns *Add an “s” girls, tigers, mirrors *Add “es” to nouns bushes, lunches, dresses,taxes that end with sh, ch, ss, or x *Drop the “y” and ladies, babies, countries add“ies” when a noun ends with a consonant before the y

  7. Rules for writing plural nouns *Add “s” when a noun boys, valleys, turkeys ends with a vowel before the y *Drop the “f” and add leaves, wolves, knives “ies” when a noun ends with /f/ sound *Change the spelling of feet, teeth, men some words *Some words don’t change salmon, deer, moose at all

  9. Possessive nouns show ownership. They need apostrophes!

  10. Rules for Writing Possessives *For a singular noun, add ‘s. (These are called singular possessives.) Examples: girl’s aunt, James’s smile, dog’s collar *For a plural noun ending in “s,” just add an ‘. (These are called plural possessives.) Examples: vases’ flowers, boys’ hats, babies’ bottles *For a plural noun not ending in “s,” add ‘s. (These are also called plural possessives.) Examples: women’s restroom, moose’s hoofs, children’s books
