  2. 1.The Alps create a natural boundary to the North of Italy. How might this have helped the ancient Romans? 2.The Apennines Mountains run through Italy, North to South (like a “zipper” on the boot.) Make a prediction about how this affected the people of ancient Rome. 3.Not much of Italy is flat. Most of the land that isn’t mountainous is covered with hills. Make an inference about how people of ancient Rome adapted to this landscape. 4.The climate of Rome is very similar to that of southern California. Knowing this, what is the climate like in Italy? Why might this type of climate be good for the ancient Romans?

  3. Early Roman History World History, Chapter 10 Packet page 3

  4. The Early History of Rome • No written records exist of Rome’s early history. • What we have found suggests that people lived in the area as early as 800 B.C. • Rome’s leaders wanted their city to have a glorious past. Therefore, they told stories and legends about great heroes and kings that built the city. --- Why? ---

  5. The Story of Aeneas • Aeneas -great Trojan soldier. • When the Greeks destroyed Troy in the Trojan War, Aeneas fled with his followers. According to legend, he carried his father from the city of Troy. • After a long and dangerous journey, he reached Italy. • The story of this trip is told in the Aeneid, an epic poem written by a poet named Virgil around 20 B.C. • When Aeneas reached Italy, he found many people living there. He formed an alliance with one of these groups, a people called the Latins. Together they fought the other people of Italy. • After defeating these opponents, Aeneas married the daughter of the Latin king. Aeneas, his son, and their descendants became the rulers of Italy.

  6. Romulus and Remus A Latin princess called Rhea was held captive by her wicked uncle so that she could never have children. Her uncle was a king – who took power from his brother, Rhea’s Father. Her uncle never wanted her to have children. Rhea eventually left her uncle and fell in love with Mars, the God of War, and gave birth to twin boys, Romulus and Remus.

  7. Romulus and Remus The wicked uncle was so jealous of them that he sent his servants to kill Romulus and Remus. Why do you think he might want the boys dead?

  8. Romulus and Remus The servant could not kill the twin babies and sent them down the river Tiber in a basket. A long way down the river the babies were found by a she-wolf whose babies had just died.

  9. Romulus and Remus Romulus and Remus fed off the she wolf’s milk until a shepherd rescued them.

  10. Romulus and Remus The shepherd and his wife raised the boys as their own. Romulus and Remus soon grew into strong men. They left home some years later to create a city by the River Tiber.

  11. Romulus and Remus Both men wanted to name the city after its ruler but they could not decide which of them would make the best ruler. They fought a great battle and Romulus killed Remus.

  12. Romulus and Remus Romulus named the Rome after himself and became the first ruler of the city. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA1D9wd29jI

  13. Roman Kings • According the history, Romulus was the first king of Rome. • Roman records list seven kings who ruled the city. • Rome’s last three kings came from the Etruscan people from the north. • It is said that the last Roman King was a cruel man who had many people killed. • Around 509 B.C., this evil king as overthrown and the nobles created a republic.
