The Pomo The Pomo was a California Native American Tribe. They lived in Northern California. They also lived on the coast near the Russian River. They also lived near the Pacific Ocean. Summers were warm and winters were mild. Many things made the Pomo unique from other Native American tribes such as the homes they lived in, the food they ate , the jobs they did, the clothing they wore and more.
Did you hear about Pomo homes? The Pomo lived in homes near Clear Lake. They used tule reeds for these marshy areas. They bundled up the tule and tied them to the poles. They had oval shaped homes with fireplaces in them. Those who lived in Russian river valleys lived in homes made the same way as Clear Lake homes but, they were made out of grass and brush instead. Coastal homes were cone shaped. They covered the poles with redwood bark.
How did the Pomo hunt food and get food? The Pomo gathered and ate seeds, nuts, acorns, berries, fish, small animals, rabbits, and deer. They went under water to hunt fish. They also trapped animals. They caught the animals by tying three strings together and tying rocks at each end. Then they threw it at the animals to trap them. They ate deer, elk, grass and bowlas. They also smashed acorns into mush.
What jobs did the Pomo have? Men hunted and fished. They made fishing nets, tools, and axes. They also made baskets for babies. Women gathered berries, nuts, and other plants, and prepared food. And they also made baskets and clothing. They wove cloth from willow, redwood, and tule. The older Pomo people hunted food, fished, and raised their grandchildren. They watched children when parents were busy.
