  1. UniBjerknes Centre Brazil delegation visiting Bergen Trond Dokken

  2. Uni Bjerknes Centre Profile • Topical unit of Uni Research AS, a not-for-profit research company. Fully owned by the University of Bergen • Annual turnower: ~ 50 mNOK. • ~ 62 employees, incl. 13 adjunct (20% positions) • 4 Research Groups • Partnership with Univ. of Bergen (jointly located) • Comprises 40% of science activity and output from the Bjerknes Centre (CoE 2003-2012)

  3. International evaluation of Earth Sciences in Norway • BCCR ranked at the top nationally • The Evaluation Committee has an extremely positive overall impression of the centre • BCCR can be considered to be amongst the leading international organizations in the field of Climate Change research • High impact: papers cited 2x more often than national average

  4. Science, 2007 … T. Dokken,.. E.Jansen.., U. Ninnemann Nature geoscience 2009 MARGO-members, ……., T. Dokken, … Nature geoscience 2009 …, Ø. Lie, …, T. Dokken, … Science, 2008 H. Kleiven, …., U. Ninnemann Science, 2010 A. Olsen, U. Ninnemann Nature geoscience 2010 …., T. Dokken, ….. Nature geoscience 2010 O. H. Otterå et al.

  5. Development and drift of Earth system modelling Atmospheric chemistry CAM CLM CICE River routing MICOM HAMOCC NorESM framework and model components • 600+ model years of pre-industrial spinup completed. The integration is being analysed for model quality and drift • Production runs started early Feb 2011 • The production period will last 3-4 months • 2200+ model years will be produced • Total storage requirement is estimated to 150TB Components in blue communicate trough a coupling component. Components inred are subroutines of blue components.

  6. External forcing and Atlantic variability Otterå et al. (2010), Nature Geoscience A recent study indicate that volcanic eruptions can have a proufound impact on climate not only short term climate variability, but also for variability on longer time scales

  7. Forstå dekadavariasjoner fra modeller og paleo-data Simulated NAO (500 hPa) vs Ormen reconstruction Atlantic ocean core locations Remarkable similarities between model and data on multidecadal time scales => link to gyre circulation? Otterå, Dokken et al., in prog.

  8. Ocean acidification in Arktis pH reduction 1995-2070 Using a coupling between observations and modelling The first to show the exceptional sensitivity of the Arctic to ocean acidification Bellerby et al., 2005; 2010

  9. Process studies of ecosystem response Climate change response to and enhanced biological carbon pump in a high CO2 ocean? Riebesell U., Schulz K. G., Bellerby R.G.J., Botros M., Fritsche P., Meyerhöfer M. Neill C., Nondal G., Oschlies A. and Wohlers J. 2007. Nature 2007;450:545-549.
