  5. There are 10 million people without water in developed countries.

  6. More than 3 times more people lack water than live in the US.

  7. More people have a cell phone than a toilet.

  8. 780 million people lack access to clean water.

  9. An American taking a five minute shower uses more water than an average person in a developing country slum uses in a day.

  10. Worldwide, 1 out of every 5 deaths of children under five is due to a water-related illness.

  11. Half of the world’s hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water-related illness.

  12. Girls under 15 years old are 2 times more likely than boys to be responsible for fetching water.

  13. Over half of the developing world’s primary schools don’t have access to water and sanitation facilities. Without toilets, the girls often drop out at puberty.

  14. The average container for water collection in Africa, the jerry can, weighs over 40 pounds when full.

  15. Globally, we use 70 percent of water sources for agriculture and irrigation and only 10 percent for domestic uses.

  16. According to the World Health Organization, for every $1 invested in water and sanitation, there is an economic return of between $3 and $34.
