  5. Uses of the land • People use the land in many different ways: • People build on land. They use wood and rocks from the land to build. • They use the resources from the land. Metals, gemstones and coal are mined. • They use the land for farming. • They use the soil to grow plants

  7. Land pollution • Read p. 344 What causes land pollution? 1. Solid waste (trash) 2. Chemicals 3. Noise and light Effects: • Trash can harm plants and animals • It makes the land ugly

  8. Air pollution • Read p. 345 What causes air pollution? Smoke from trucks, cars and factories Effects: • It makes it hard for people to breathe • It changes the weather • The Earth becomes warmer

  9. Water pollution • Read p. 346 What causes water pollution? 1. Rain washes dirt from air and land into water. 2. People who throw trash and oil in the water. Effects: • Drinking polluted water can make people sick • Animals that live in the water will be sick and may die
