  3. What are Context Clues? • A new word or information such as a (definition, synonym, antonym, or example) that appears near a word or phrase and offers suggestions about its meaning • Hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word.

  4. Types of Context Clues • Synonym- a word with the same meaning is used in a sentence. Ex. buy and purchase/ big and large • Antonym- a word or group of words that has the opposite meaning reveals the meaning of an unknown term Ex. My opponent’s argument is fallacious, misleading –plain wrong • Explanation- The unknown word is explained in the sentence or the next sentence Ex. Although some men are loquacious, or others hardly talk at all. • Example- specific examples are used to define the term Ex. Celestial bodies, such as the sun, moon, and stars are governed by predictable laws .

How to use Context Clues • Locate the unfamiliar word • Write the word down • Write down the paragraph or page number • Read before and after the word (read around the word) • Write down words that help you find the meaning of the word (context clues) • Write down what you think the word means (make predictions) • Check to make sure your prediction makes sense (reread to confirm)

  7. Context Clue Practice • Directions: Read the following sentences and define the bolded/underlined word based on the context clue. Then identify which of the four types of clues is used. • The girl who used to be very vociferous doesn’t talk much anymore • The girl was churlish-rude, sullen, and absolutely ill-manered

  9. Practice Time • Directions: Read the following sentences or phrases INDEPENDENTLY and define the bolded/underlined word based on the context clue. Then identify which of the four types of clues is used • His pertinacity, or stubbornness is the cause of most of his trouble • Rather than be involved in clandestine meetings, they did everything quite openly. • Ecclesiastics, such as priests, ministers, and pastors, should set models of behaviors for their congregants.
