  3. Glorifying God • The one thing human will not do (1:21) • We Glorify God: • By living in Kingdom “Shalom” [Wellbeing] • By taking kingdom “Shalom” into the world • God’s glory is revealed in: • Our lifestyles (not covered here) • The way we relate to each other

  4. 1. Bear with the “Weak” • It is an obligation, a debt (13:8) • The debt of love • In “disputable matters” • The strong should be patient and gentle • Not “pleasing ourselves” (v 1) • But “Pleasing our neighbour” (v 2) • For their GOOD • To BUILD them UP • The purpose of our relationships: EDIFICATION • Like Jesus (v 3)

  5. 1. Bear with the “Weak” . . . • Jesus did not please himself. Nor should we ! • Prayer (v 5-6): • The encouragement and endurance to be like Jesus • Putting others, and their wellbeing, before ourselves • When we do this we bring glory to God (Jn 13:35)

  6. 2. Accept / Welcome One Another • Paul reiterates his command from 14:1 • Accept = Welcome (loving & joyful) • Just as Christ accepted us • The weak do not know that they are weak ! • Could be self-righteous, irritating, obnoxious, ... • Could be hyper sensitive, manipulative, take offense ... • Very much like ME !!! • Need to grow and learn and be transformed !!!

  7. 2. Accept / Welcome One Another . . . • Fall on a continuum • Some are young and immature • Others are old and wise and full of grace • Most of us somewhere in-between • We live like servants just as Jesus did (v 8)

  8. 3. Word & Spirit • Jesus lived according to what was written (v 3) - so do we !!! • WORD: Source of two essentials of our walk: • Endurance (perseverance) • Encouragement (comfort) • Faithfulness when the going gets tough (Mt 7:13-14) • Source of comfort and encouragement • The Word of God is SOUL FOOD !!! • Our source of Hope

  9. 3. Word & Spirit . . . • Word is made active by the Power of the SPIRIT ! • In the SPIRIT we overflow with hope, joy, peace (v 13). • Living our lives in “Attentive Intimacy” (12:9-21) • Not just a list of do’s and dont’s • Cannot reduce our relationship to God to laws (ch 7) WORD: Guides and Encourages SPIRIT: Empowers, fills us with joy and peace

  10. Glorifying God • Bearing with and Accepting one another – is a miracle • Called to: • Be Transformed by the renewing of our minds • Consider ourselves with sober judgment • Love sincerely, practice hospitality, associate with the lowly (A picture) • Be easy to lead (a joy to those in authority) • Accept one another and live in Love
