  1. Laboratory Write-up Format Copper Lab Chemistry A and B Cambridge-Isanti High School

  2. General Considerations • Title is underlined. • Section headings are underlined and a colon is placed after the heading name. • Cover page is preferable. • Spelling and grammar will be graded. • Quality and creativity never hurt.

  3. Copper Lab I.M. Smart Block 2 • Purpose/Objective: To take a known quantity of copper through five different reactions; observing the results of the reactions, and determining a percent yield for the copper. • Materials: • Procedure:

  4. 250mL beaker Ringstand with wire gauze 25mL graduate 50mL graduate Stirring rod Rubber policeman HNO3 H2SO4 NaOH Copper tinsel Materials

  5. Procedure • Shown in its entirety • Clear and to the point • Leave out unneeded additions

  6. Observations • Clear and to the point. • List or sentence format (no paragraphs)

  7. Data Table • Does not have to be in “table format” • List only those items measured in the lab • Proper units • Equations?

  8. Data Table • Mass of Cu Tinsel • Mass of evaporating dish • Mass of dish and dry copper

  9. Calculations • Show all of your work • Significant figures • Proper units • Equations?

  10. Calculations • Final mass of Cu • Percent Yield

  11. Equation Writing • State reactants and products • Addition symbols • Arrow • Subscripts • HNO3 or HNO3 • Balance

  12. Errors • Experimentor: mistakes in the lab that were your fault. • Experimental: mistakes in the lab that were beyond your control. • List two of each kind.

  13. Conclusion • Relates back to the objective. • “We were able to achieve our objective by taking the copper through five known conversions. Our percent yield was ____%. The theoretical percent yield was 101 – 103%. We believe ours did not agree due to __________________.”
