  1. Future of ITS Products and Services in Airport Operations Los Angeles World Airports August 2008

  2. ITS Projects • Traffic Operations Center • Real-time signal timing • CCTV cameras • Variable Message Signs • Portable • Permanent • Information Kiosks • Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) • Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII)

  3. LAX Traffic Operations Center

  4. LAX Traffic Operations Center

  5. LAX Traffic Operations Center • Satellite of LADOT’s Automated Traffic Control System (ATCS) • Detector loops in airport access roads • Real-time signal timing; operator over-ride during peak periods • CCTV cameras - coverage of airport area

  6. Changeable Message Signs Intelligent Transportation Systems Real Time Signal Operations LAX Traffic Operations Center Closed Circuit Television Traffic Detection Systems Automatic Vehicle Identification/ Automated Vehicle Locator Traffic and Airport Advisory Radio

  7. Portable Variable Message Signs • Purchased before 9/11 when traffic volumes above 100,000 vehicles/day • Balanced demand between roadway levels, based on historical peaks • Subsequently used for security • Lesson learned: Purchased for a deadline; cannot program remotely (major drawback)

  8. Permanent Variable Message Signs • Discussion for LA/ONT • At LAX, worked with LADOT on community signs • Plans for smaller signs on airport access roads, before decision points

  9. Information Kiosks

  10. Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) • Agencies partner in managing corridor, including freeways, arterial signals, rail and bus • Optimize use of parallel routes and utilize unused capacities • Dynamic response to changing traffic conditions – notify drivers of upcoming congestion and provide alternatives • USDOT has selected eight “pioneer sites” to develop strategies

  11. Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) Source: USDOT website, ITS, RITA

  12. Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) • Wireless connection of vehicles with each other and with roadside equipment • On-board units in vehicles • Accident prevention • Advanced transportation management • Vehicles can transmit travel time and environmental conditions • In the future, will lead to improved signal control, better travel information and planning, and reduced cost for data collection
