  1. MATH 110 Fall 2009 Welcome to the MTLC

  2. Instructors Sections 01, 03: Jil Chambless Section 05: Nathan Jackson Sections 07, 09: Mary Maxwell Section 10: Larry Bowen Sections 12, 14: Camille Steiner Section 16: Brie Gann Welcome to the MTLC

  3. Math 110 is a terminal course Math 110 is not a prerequisite for anything. If your major requires Math 112, you do not need to take Math 110, you need to take Math 100 (even if you placed directly into Math 110). If you need to take Math 112, you should drop Math 110 NOW and add Math 100 or Math 112.

  4. Course Requirements • Prerequisites • Grade of C– or better in Math 100 • Minimum of 250 (25) on the placement test • Every student must have an active “crimson” e-mail account to register for the course. • Every student must have a NEW access code unless you took the course previously.

  5. Access Codes Every student must have a new access code to access the publisher’s online website where assignments can be completed. An access code gives you access to the MyLabsPlus website where you will find your assignments. The code gives you access to an online textbook, video lectures, examples of assignments and many more useful tools to help you be successful in this course.

  6. Access Codes • Access codes may be purchased with or without a printed version of the textbook. • You may purchase the code with the textbook at any of the bookstores in town. • You may purchase the code without a printed version of the book either at one of the bookstores in town or online on the mylabsplus website set up for your specific math course. • Again, no work can be completed until you have purchased and/or entered your access code in the course software.

  7. Access Codes –Repeating Students • If you are repeating the course, then you should be able to log in to the new course already. If you have any trouble, then be sure to come to the MTLC immediately for assistance.

  8. Course Grades • Possible grades in this course are A, B, C (+/-) or NC. • A grade of NC means you receive no credit for this course. You must take the course again, but an NC does not affect your GPA. • The last day to withdraw from the course is Wednesday, October 28. No withdrawals will be given after this date.

  9. Course Grades • Final Exam 300 pts • 4 tests (100 points each) 400 pts • Quiz average (40 points each test period) 160 pts • Homework average (17 points each test period) 68 pts • Class Meetings (3 points for each week) 42 pts • Lab Attendance (3 points for each week) 30 pts • Survey 2 pts • TOTAL 1002 pts Students must earn a minimum of 700 points to successfully pass this course.

  12. Class Attendance • Every student is required to come to class at the scheduled class time on the following days: • Wed. 8/19 and Fri. 8/21 for Mon/Wed/Fri classes • Thurs. 8/20 for Tues/Thurs classes • After the first week of class, every student is required to attend a class meeting on Wednesday or Thursday each week and sign the class roll. • Class meetings will be held at the scheduled time in the scheduled classroom. • Each class meeting is worth 3 points.

  13. Success Rate based onClass Attendance from Fall 2007 • 3 or fewer absences • Passing rate – 98.2% • 4 or more absences • Passing rate – 43.59%

  14. Lab Hours • Students are required to spend a minimum of 3 hours each week in the MTLC (math lab) doing work. Time spent in the MTLC working on the computer, reviewing for tests, and attending help sessions counts toward your ‘lab hours’. • Students will earn 3 points a week toward the lab attendance grade for meeting this requirement. • Lab attendance points will also be given if each assignment (homework and quiz) for the week is completed with a grade of 70% or higher by the given deadline.

  15. Quizzes & Homeworks • There will be homework assignments for each section and they will be graded. Multiple attempts are allowed on homework. Be sure to click on the “Save” button when you are ready to record your homework score. You may submit homework before the assignment is finished and return to it later. • There will be a quiz given after each section. Click on the “Submit” button when ready for your quiz score to be recorded. Only two attempts are allowed on quizzes. • You will be allowed to drop one lowest homework grade and one lowest quiz grade each test period. Makeup work may be allowed. To request permission to make up work, students must fill out a petition form in Room 345 Gordon Palmer.

  16. Quizzes & Homeworks • Homework is worth 17 points each test period. • Quizzes are worth 40 points each test period. • A quiz is worth more than twice a homework. So prepare accordingly. • Each section of material has a due date. • Homework deadline is at noon • Quiz deadline is at 1 pm

  17. Lab Hours In the example below, Student 1 and Student 2 must spend three hours in the lab to receive their lab points for the week.

  18. Lab Attendance Points Partial points can be earned on lab hours. Every time you enter or exit the MTLC lab the monitor will swipe your ID card even if you exit for a short time. Anyone caught swiping another student’s ID will be charged with academic misconduct.

  19. Lab Attendance If you miss any assignment for the week then your lab attendance will be based on your actual hours in the MTLC for the week (because one of your grades for the week would be 0%, which is below 70%). This is true even if you are planning on using your missed assignment as one of your drop grades.

  20. Testing Procedures • Tests days are shown on the front page of your syllabus. • You will need to register for a test time during a test registration week as noted on the front page of your syllabus. Details will be discussed later in class as Test 1 gets near. • There are penalties for failure to register on time. Read test rules on syllabus for more information.

  21. Replacement Policy • Everyone will be allowed to replace his or her lowest test grade with the grade made on the final exam. • Zero grades due to unexcused absences or academic misconduct will not be replaced. • If a test is missed due to a serious, verifiable circumstance, the zero test grade will also be replaced with the final exam grade, but only if a petition request form is filed within 2 days and if the petition request panel approves the excuse. • Go to Room 345 Gordon Palmer to fill out and file a petition request form.
