  1. BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care Making the right options choice!

  2. The Health and Social Care department • The Head of Department is Mrs Klein. You can find her in room 14 near the canteen. • Ms Logan, in room 15, and Mrs Lundie also teach the course.

  3. Assessment • All BTEC courses are attained through assessment assignments produced during your three years of study. • There is no exam. • You will study 8 different units, and each unit has an assignment that is written to enable you to achieve the grading criteria for that unit. • Your class teacher will set, guide you to complete, and then assess each assignment. • You will be given feedback telling you what your next steps will be to achieve the grading criteria. You will be able to improve and resubmit each piece of work more than once, until you have achieve the required level.

  4. Core units of study These units MUST BE PASSED. • Communication in Health and Social Care • Without effective communication how do we know what service is needed? • Individual Rights in Health and Social Care • What makes us a diverse society, and how can care professions fulfil everyone’s rights? • Individual Needs in Health and Social Care • Understanding how someone’s health can be affected and how to plan to improve it. • Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care • Learning about the legislation that underpins health and safety in settings.

  5. Specialised units of study • Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care • Understanding different beliefs and practices that make us different, and the laws that ensure equality. • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care • How the body works and how to identify when things go wrong. • Human Lifespan Development • How someone’s experiences and background affect the kind of person they become. • The Impact of Diet on Health • Understanding the close links between what we eat and how healthy, or unhealthy, we are.

  6. Why should you do this course? • The BTEC in Health and Social Care offers you a practical and relevant start to a career in the caring professions. • You should choose this course if you are a caring, patient young person. • If you want to work with people, helping them through difficult situations, or providing care and understanding.

  7. Where might this course lead you? • The Level 2 Diploma can lead to junior level positions in a wide variety of careers, including working in care homes, nursing, social and community work and counselling. • Or, you might choose to extend your knowledge and progress onto the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma, also offered here at TRNS. • Links to career progression include: Teaching, Policing, the Armed Forces, the NHS, Social Care, Dietician, Personal Trainer, Psychologist, Care Worker in residential settings, Nursery work, Health Promotion etc...etc...!
