  1. Wow Science Experiments Beryl McKinnell Science Technician Papatoetoe High School South Auckland bemckinnell@papatoetoehigh.school.nz

  2. Welcome to the laboratory • Remember: Never be tempted to use lab glassware as a drinking vessel • Here’s why • This also works in “Chemical Change” topic

  3. Solid –solid interaction Potassium iodide Lead nitrate

  4. Rainbow Tube • Use a 500 – 1000 mL measuring cylinder • Add 1.5 - 2 cm 1.0 molL-1 acid (HCl or H2SO4 but this fizzes quite badly) • Fill with tap water and add universal indicator to a strong colour. • Dump in about ½ tablespoon crystalline washing soda (Na2CO3.10H2O) • Tip 11/2 times • Stir if necessary

  5. Rainbow Racks are fun too! • Give students: 6 test tubes, a dropper, universal indicator, dropper bottles of 0.1 molL-1 NaOH and 0.1 molL-1 HCl and tell the to make 1 test tube of each colour.

  6. Baking powder powered toys • Acid –base reaction • Volcano (underwater eruptions)

  7. Another Tornado Purchase Tornado tube (sometimes called Vortex tube) from • $2 shop • Teacher Direct http://www.teacherdirect.co.nz • Nature’s Window • Rae McKean’s Pacific Read • Delta Education • Prof Bunsen

  8. An endothermic reactionalso a solid –solid reaction 32 g barium hydroxide 16 g ammonium thiocyanate

  9. An exothermic reaction Heat pads with metal snap button Prof Bunsen Kathmandu (Hand warmers) (buy when they have a ½ price sale)

  10. Equilibrium 10 g glucose 10 g NaOH 250 mL water methylene blue or methylene blue and safranine

  11. Equilibrium • Colour change ducks from Prof Bunsen • Liquid crystal temperature gauges • Mood Ring • Stress card –Dick Smith

  12. Optical Isotopes • Try one of these balls for a graphic display of what you are talking about. These balls are in the $2 shop.

  13. Just for fun – or polymers • Happy and Sad balls • PVA goo –also can fit with “solids, liquids and gases” • ooblek

  14. Magnets • Rattlesnake eggs (magnetoids) • Sticky stones • Floating pen • Revolutions • Round magnets • Lenz law

  15. Revolutions

  16. Round Magnets I purchased these from Crescendo (o.d.100mm diameter, i.d. 50mm diameter, 14mm thick). Cost $19.80 each

  17. Lenz Law

  18. Astroblaster • Shows the same thing as Newton’s cradle –conservation of momentum but as the students haven’t seen this they “sit up and take notice” • Purchase Natures Window (was about $11) • Crescendo (Prof Bunsen listings $25)

  19. Force and Motion • Constant velocity machine ($2 shop style) Science or Physics 1.1 “See that car go” • Matchbox cars (packs of 25 for $8-$10 at Warehouse round Christmas time) • Skateboards (fingerboards) $2 shop • Ping pong balls ($2 shop pack of 6) • Marbles (large) ($2 shop packs of about 10) • Golf balls (buy experienced ones)

  20. Levers/forces/mobileswww.papertoys.com

  21. Balancing tricks Balancing 2 forks on the side of a glass with a toothpick. 7 nails balanced on 1 nail

  22. Light Look in the $2 shop (or similar) for • Kaleidoscopes –there are a couple of types available • Disgust-o-scopes • Periscopes • Small mirrors • A4 Plastic mirrors (about $11 each)can be purchased from Teacher Direct Ltd http://www.teacherdirect.co.nz hotline@teacherdirect.co.nz 0800 92 92 92 Phone +64 4 568 2088

  23. TITANIUM DIOXIDE • This fits great in “Light” topic.

  24. Total Internal Reflection

  25. Fibre Optic cables • Finger lights • Fibre Optic lamp

  26. Microscopes Mount “e”s and eyes on microscope slide Crossed hairs or threads Interesting prepared slides Dissected “rat brains”

  27. Electronic Toys • Earth ball /UFO ball/ flashing ball • Vibrating egg • Dancing coke bottle • Plasma ball

  28. Energy Circus • Giggle stick • Child’s noise maker –some do light and sound • Solar powered calculator (without battery back up) • Solenoid, magnet and galvanometer • Hand bell (or tin with nails) • Foam glider • Hand powered torch • Solar motor (will run on OHP if careful when no sun) • Wind up toy (if you can find one –buy cheap)

  29. Energy circus continued • Loop the loop apparatus • Whirling pipe • Magnets (preferably top and bottom poles) • Waterwheel (child’s sandpit toy look in plastic centre) • Candle plus thermocouple and galvanometer Teacher demos • Cookes radiometer • Glowstick • Steam engine

  30. Other toys • Yoyo • Whizmo • Jacobs ladder • Jumping beans • Cartesian diver
