  1. 7th Grade Vocabulary Set 1

  2. Physio- Greek root referring to things in their natural form, order, or origin • Physiocrat- believes that there is a natural, inherent order for properly governing society. • Ex: The physiocratapproves of free trade. • Physiognomy- the features or expressions of a face. • Ex: Frankenstein’s physiognomy frightened the town’s citizens. • Physiography- the study of the earth’s features. • Ex: We learned about the earth’s landforms and climates in our physiography class. • Physiology- studies the natural chemical and physical functions of living oranisms. • Ex: In my physiology class, I learned that the brain sends signals to the heart to make it beat. • Physiometry- measures the functions of the body. • Ex: The physiometry part of his check-up included a measurement of his resting heart rate.

  3. Peripheral- an external hardware device that is connected to a computer, usually by a cable. • Ex: Keyboards, mice, printers, and monitors are all peripherals. How many peripherals does your computer have connected to it? • Backup- a duplicate or copy for the purpose of avoiding loss in case the original is corrupted, destroyed, or lost. • Ex: We can make a backup of the information from our hard drive by copying it onto a disk. • Compression- the process of making a file or group of files use less storage space. • Ex: Using compression software, John condensed his music files so that they were one-tenth their original size.

  4. The Greek root osteo- means bone • Osteoblast- a bone-forming cell. • Ex: Healthy osteoblasts are needed for strong bones. • Osteochondritis- inflammation of the bone and cartilage. • Ex: Knees are often affected by osteochondritis. • Osteocope- severe pain in the bones. • Ex: Osteocope is symptomatic of certain diseases. • Osteogenesis- refers to the formation of the bone. • Ex: Osteogenesis occurs early in the embryo.

  5. Knowing the numerical values of the Greek prefixes proto-, deutero-, and tri- helps us with word meanings • Proto- means “first” or “earliest form.” • Prototype is the earliest model, or original, of something. • Ex: The glider served as a prototype for the airplane. • Deutero- means “second.” • Deuteronomy is the second statement of Mosaic law in the Old Testament. • Ex: The Mosaic laws set forth in the book of Exodus are repeated in the book of Deuteronomy. • Tri- means “three.” • Triarchy refers to government by three people. • Ex: The king, queen, and prince formed the nation’s triarchy.
