  1. Chemical Names & FormulasBinary Molecular Compounds

  2. Binary Molecular Compounds • Binary – 2 different elements • Molecular – Covalently bonded 2 NON-METALS Examples: N2O, S2O3, CCl4

  3. Naming Binary Molecular Compounds Prefix + Name of 1st non-metal (if more than one) AND Prefix + Root name of + -ide (always) 2nd non-metal Example: H2O dihydrogen monoxide

  4. Prefixes 1- mono 6- hexa 2- di 7- hepta 3- tri 8- octa 4- tetra 9- nona 5- penta 10- deca **When an element begins with a vowel, drop the “o” or “a” off the prefix** ex: dinitrogen tetroxide

  5. Changing the endings • “ROOT” name of the 2nd nnon-metal + -ide sulfur ………………….. sulfide nitrogen ……………… nitride chlorine ……………… chloride phosphorus…………. phosphide oxygen ……………….. oxide

  6. Practice Problems • Name the following compounds: • N2O • NO • N2O4 • N2O3 • NO2

  7. Practice Problems • Write the formulas for the following: • Oxygen difluoride • Sulfur hexafluoride • Chlorine dioxide • Sulfur trioxide • Carbon monoxide
