Our Guidelines • Respect agreement with source to protect informants • Not as gospel truth • Cables for thorough editing and clearance process • No endangering of life, property or stability • Cross-check & verify info • Cautious & skeptical • Research & interviews • Context for all cables • Guard cables against leakage

  4. Execution • Prioritize Stories • Multiplatform in coverage • Publish raw cables with stories • Involve radio/television partners • Creative, digital involvement • Extra research • Dedicated Quality control staff

  5. Our blunder • President voted four times!

  6. Lessons • Leaked docs can be questionable, misleading • Claims in some cables were inaccurate • Every info shouldn’t be believed • Should be raw materials for stories, not complete stories in themselves

  7. What to do • Be skeptical • Authenticate docs • Check & verify claims • Hear all sides & provide context • Develop numerate skills to analyze huge materials • Be literate in research
