  1. Chain of Events: Causes of the American Revolution 11/3: Chain of Events: Causes of the Revolution 14 Proclamation of 1763: GB wanted to end fighting so they limited westward growth. Made people angry! The French and Indian War caused Britain to tax the colonists more and limit expansion Etc….

  2. Chain Link #1: French and Indian War • French and Indian War- • Between French and British in N. America (1745-1763) • Britain won; France lost all land in N. America

  3. Chain Link #2: Proclamation of 1763 • Proclamation of 1763 • Britain said no more moving west of the Appalachian Mtns • Speculators (investors) who had bought land there were furious

  4. Chain Link #3: Britain wants to reduce its debt Britain wants to get rid of debt from F&I War: Sugar Act (1764): law that put a tax on molasses Stamp Act (1765): tax on all printed goods (newspapers, wills, playing cards etc.  needed to be stamped by the British)

  5. Chain Link #4: Burned in effigy • Colonists were ANGRY about Stamp Act! • “No Taxation Without Representation!!” • Protestors burned unpopular tax collectors in effigy

  6. Chain Link #5: Act Repealed…? • Stamp Act Repealed • 1766: British Parliament repealed Stamp Act • Colonists happy!! But...

  7. Chain Link #6: Townsend Acts • Townshend Acts (1767) • Taxed imported goods • Glass, tea, paper, lead

  8. Chain Link #7: Daughters of Liberty • Daughters of Liberty • Colonists boycott imported goods • Women created the “Daughters of Liberty-” urged people to use and wear only American-made things

  9. Chain Link #8: Boston Massacre • Boston Massacre • Scuffle between colonists and British soldiers leaves 5 colonists dead, including Crispus Attucks • Colonists FURIOUS!!

  13. Chain Link #12: Intolerable Acts • Intolerable Acts • King George III punished Boston • 1774-Coercive Acts- closed Harbor, banned town mtgs, and forced colonists to keep British soldiers in their houses (Quartering)

  14. Chain Link #13: Continental Congress • Continental Congress • 1774-colonists met in Philadelphia, PA to create a political body to challenge British control
