  4. The Usual Pressures • Tight budgets • Accreditors such as SACS, NCATE, emphasizing the importance of using data to guide improvement

  5. Unusual Response • Leadership • President Dorothy Yancy • Coordinated, shared effort from Dir. of Information Services, Dir. of Faculty Development, Dir. Of IR, and others

  6. Support • Series of mini-grants for faculty • Required training in assessment (including Flashlight Online), doing assessment, and interpreting results in exchange for money • Faculty often had to work together, share data • Faculty lead the assessment training • Funds from UNCF, Bush, Hewlett…

  7. Persistence and Patience • 4 years of effort, with little to show in first year or two • Faculty often had to create 2-3 surveys before focusing enough to uncover useful findings.

Results • Over half the faculty are doing studies regularly • Don Mager (English) learned how to improve his strategies for moderating student discussion • Sociology Dept is going to study changes in informal student interaction, community • Gene Hermitte (history) got useful feedback on his use of concept maps • Joe Turner, Maria Papanikolaou (English) are studying how their students develop information literacy
