  7. Testing MAP (or Measures of Academic Progress) is an online test used in Grades 1-8 MAP allows us to assess where a student is, and how they’ve grown in achievement, several times each year. This year all Elementary and Middle schools will participate in MAP. MAP gives teachers timely feedback on student progress throughout the school year that they can use to adjust instruction effectively.

  8. PARCC is the name for the new reading, writing and mathematics assessments developed by the multi-state Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. PARCC assessments are closely aligned to the Common Core standards. PARCC replaces the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) for math and reading/English language arts. PARCC was piloted in selected schools last year. This year PARCC will be implemented in every school in Grades 3-11.

  10. Building Vocabulary A New Approach to Word Study WHO is involved? • Every 1st-5th grader in all Howard County Public Schools will be instructed using the new Building Vocabulary program.

WHAT is it? • A program to effectively help students see the meaningful patterns that exist in many words and use the words in daily conversations as well as in reading and writing. • This program will focus on foundational skills as well as Greek and Latin roots as they are outlined in our new Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.

  12. LA Homework • Monday through Thursday • Word work journal will travel back • and forth to school • Reading Calendar (RC) 10 min nightly • Will use dictation assessments • Differentiation • Foster independent working skills • Begins Sept 22nd

  13. Math Homework Monday and Thursday Activities are a reinforcement of class objectives. Monday will be a hands on activity, Please initial log after completion. One night more traditional format. Math Logs/Flashcards Begins the week of October 6th

Reading Calendar • Completed on calendars found in agenda • Reading is a required part of homework! • Record minutes (10) sign or initial • Reading homework goal is to read 22/30 days • Extra reading coupons!!! • No need to record book titles • Incentives • Book IT • Begins when word work homework begins on September 22nd
