  3. Definition • Assistive Technology is any device that is used to aid a student with a disability reach the goals of his or her IEP. This technology helps to keep these students in the general education classroom as much as possible.

  4. The Law Concerning Assistive Technology What you need to Know!!! • The law is broken up into two sections about assistive technology. • These parts are: • Assistive technology devices • Assistive technology services

  5. Assistive Technology Devices • According to the Georgia Department of Education website, this is the definition IDEA gives for assistive technology devices. • “Assistive technology devices are identified in the IDEA 2004 as: Any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.”

  6. Assistive Technology Services • According to the Georgia Department of Education website, this is the definition IDEA gives for assistive technology services. • “As defined in IDEA, an assistive technology service is: Any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, and use of an assistive technology device. The term includes - • The evaluation of the needs of a child with a disability, including a functional evaluation of the child in the child’s customary environment; • Purchasing, leasing, or otherwise providing for the acquisition of assistive technology devices by children with disabilities; • Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, retaining, repairing, or replacing assistive technology devices; • Coordinating and use other therapies, interventions, or services with assistive technology devices, such as those associated with existing education and rehabilitation plans and programs; • Training or technical assistance for a child with a disability or, if appropriate, that child’s family; and • Training or technical assistance for professionals (including individuals or rehabilitation services), employers, or other individuals who provide services to employ, or are otherwise substantially involved in the major life functions of children with disabilities.”

  7. Extra Information about the Law • Idea 2004 requires IEP teams to look into assistive technology as a way to helps students with disabilities reach their goals. Although there is no clear outline for the process in which IEP teams must go about this requirement. • IDEA 2004 has a very vague definition of assistive technology. This is to help insure that no child is denied a chance to learn because of a disability. It gives IEP some room to work with as well. It could be harder to provide the technology needed if the law was too concrete.

  8. Examples of Assistive Technology

  9. Hearing Impaired Assistive Technology COMTEK AT-216- this device is used to help someone with a hearing impairment. The student has a receiver that he or she puts in his or her ear. The teacher or presenter wears the other box and talks through a microphone. This helps the student hear no matter where he or she sits as well as allows him or her to hear more clearly. 10. Seeing Impaired Assistive Technology Screen magnifiers can be used to help the seeing impaired see textbooks and other items on a much larger scale. There are many different versions of screen magnifiers. This is just oneof many. You find out more at the link below. 11. Assistive Technology for the Learning Disabled Audio books can help a student with a learning disability in reading. A student that struggles in reading may benefit from hearing a book being read. A list of ten free audio books can be found by following the link. 12. Assistive Technologyfor the Physically Disabled Assistive keyboards such as this expanded keyboard can sometimes be used for the physically impaired. Someone who struggles to move their arms and fingers to type on a standard keyboard might find this type of assistive technology useful.
