Alps-Carpathian Corridor

The Alps-Carpathian Corridor connects protected areas in Austria and Slovakia, lying in the dynamic CENTROPE region between Vienna and Bratislava. It aims to treat the interests of nature and humans equally, addressing challenges of dense population, economic activities, and traffic infrastructure. The objectives include generating a comprehensive information basis, maintaining coherence of protected areas, raising awareness, securing sustainability, and supporting regional development. The project involves various stakeholders, including nature conservation, NGOs, research institutions, and governmental bodies.

  2. Where is the Alps-Carpathian Corridor? It connects numerous protected areas in Austria and Slovakia. It lies in the dynamic region of CENTROPE, between Vienna and Bratislava It is part of the Danube Region... ...and the European Green Belt

  3. Unique challenges • Natural sites of outstanding importance • Dense and growing population • Economic activities:business parks and industrial areas, intensive agriculture • Dense network of traffic infrastructure

Objectives • Generate a sound information basis for decision making and investments: Comprehensive, transboundary Corridor model • Maintain the coherence of protected areas to secure genetic exchange of wildlife: Two green bridges, spatial planning • Raise awareness: training of nature guides, education & Web-GIS • Secure Sustainability: Stakeholder involvement, Common Memorandum of Understanding • Support regional development: promote adapted land-use practices, enable economic growth alongside enviromental protection

Key-figures: Cooperation of 2 countries, 5 regions, 15 protected areas Databasis for 10.000 km² 3 greenbridges planned 70% of the Coridor reconnected 80 school-visits and excursions • Investment in the green-infrastructure of Central Europe • Connecting protected areas as well as responsible managers, inhabitants and animals • Eight model sites to promote biodiversity-rich agriculture • Incorporation of results in regional development plans, e.g. Development Plan Burgenland 2011 • A Memorandum of Understanding encourages actors to put results in action

An innovative approach • Multi-level, cross-sectoral and transnational cooperation: • coordination of ecological stability and economic activities. • Cooperation of actors who are usually opposed to one another. • One of the first steps to implement the EUSDR. • Comprehensive and integrated action plan. At the right place and the right time.
