  1. “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,  To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.”

  2. “You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

  3. “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:1-14)

  4. “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother …” (Colossians 1:1) • Before saying a word to the Colossians about the problems that have come to his attention, Paul makes it evidently clear that he does not speak of his own authority, but as an apostle by the will of God with Timothy at his side. • Paul, sensitive to the Jew-Gentile issues of the early church, does this and includes Timothy as a co-writer to lend greater credibility to the direction in the letter.

  5. The Colossian Church: A Garden in Bloom

  6. Agarden only stays in full bloom when it continues to be tended. • “Live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him.” (Colossians 1:10, NIV) • “Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him”. (Colossians 1:10, ESV) • We ought to walk around, not in self-important arrogance, but in a manner that shows we understand the price paid for our newly found worth in Christ Jesus.

  7. “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work The first test : am I bearing godly fruit? growing in the knowledge of God The second test: am I growing in knowledge of God? being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience The third test: is my life resilient and patient? and giving joyful thanks to the Father …” The fourth test: is my heart full of joyful gratitude?

  8. A Blessing • Might we today recognize and accept whom God says we are - those “qualified [through Christ] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light”; those “rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the Son he loves”; “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession”. Might we walk in this reality, permitting us to bear much fruit, to grow in our knowledge of Christ, to manifest resilience and patience and to evidence hearts overflowing with joyful gratitude to the King who rescued us. Let’s pray!
