  2. Difficulty increases, why? • 2 main factors: • Increased number of hazards • Time, Distance, and Speed

  3. Using IPDE • Identify – “Aim High” • Predict – Points of Conflict • Decide – Steer, Change Speed, Communicate, Combine Actions • Execute – Carry Out Plan

  4. Class Activity • Recall of information • You will have 10 seconds to look at the next slide. • After the slide is shown you will be asked to recall the numbers from smallest to largest.

  7. Following Distance • Advantages • “Get the big picture” • “Make sure others see you” • More time for IPDE • Better position to avoid collision. • 3 second rule • Pick a check point, count 3 seconds, check position.

  8. 3 seconds always safe? • What situations might require you to maintain extra distance? • Beginner Driver • With a tailgater closing your rear zone • Approaching a line of sight restriction • Low traction • Heavy load on your vehicle • Driver ahead seems unsure • When following a motorcycle

  9. Areas for Sudden Stops • Intersections • Lanes next to parked vehicles • Business driveways with high volumes of traffic

  12. Reasons for Crossing the Center Line: Driver impairment Poor Judgment Poor Visibility Reduced Space Sudden Moves by Others Vehicle Failure Turning Buses and Trucks Double-Parked Vehicles Avoiding Conflict: Slow down Flash Lights Use Horn Move to Lane Position 3 Responding to Oncoming Traffic

  13. Approaching Possible Hazards • Covering the Brake • Make sure you do not pressure the brake, but keep foot over brake. • Will help slow you down by taking foot off accelerator. • When covering the brake you can change lane position to help give you more room (Ex. Avoiding an opening door by moving left)

  14. Where to Look and What to Look For • Look from sidewalk to sidewalk • Look at all signs, road markings, and traffic signals • Look at roadway conditions • Look for other roadway users • Look for intersections and driveways

  15. Lane Selection on Multilane Roads • Which is safest? • Are you going straight? • Turning Left? • Turning Right?

  16. Which Lane Do You Turn In To? • Always turn into the nearest lane in your direction. • On multiple lane roads this allows oncoming traffic to also turn onto road without conflict.
