  3. Your Turn! For the next 5 minutes, talk to your neighbor about what inspired you to become a librarian.   4. Tips for Achieving Your Ideal Program AND Staying Sane! • You do not have to be an expert on everything related to books and technology. You should have a comfort level and a willingness to try new things but you also need to know when you have hit your max. • Before incorporating in a new program or technology, evaluate the needs of your library program. Does this new addition have the potential to enrich your program and how? • Be organized. Good organization now makes life much easier next year when its time for that big research project or to renew your databases. • If you are overwhelmed by a new technology or program, its likely that many of your students are too. It is okay to slow down or even to take a step back.

  5. Tips Continued • Have fun! We all went into this field for a reason! • Find a few times during the year to let your passion • for literature, research, or technology really shine.

  6. Tips Continued • Ask for help. If you aren't getting it from administration or other faculty members, be creative. Recruit students or parents into your program. This will help you as well as give them a sense of meaning in relation to the library program and its success. • Support your faculty. In order to create allies within your school, you need to become one yourself. We will discuss this in more depth at the end of the session. • Keep in mind what your end goal is. For me, it is to provide the best education possible for each student that I encounter. Make decisions that will ensure success within the restrictions you have to work with.

  8. What is Moodle? Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. It is a management system that allows educators to create virtual learning environments that go beyond just conveying information. Why Use Moodle? • Potential Uses for Moodle in a School Library Media Program • Link Resources • Book Catalog • Research Links such as online encyclopedias, databases, and bibliography creators • Links for Web 2.0 tools such as Glogster • Create a Moodle Webpage • Organize Teacher Provided Links • Upcoming Book Release List • Promote Other Library resources such as your blog or glog • Create Chat Forums • Class support such as discussion of resources • Literature promotion such as a Book vs. Movie discussion forum • Upload Tutorials to Provide Assistance for Students • Upload Documents to Share with Faculty or Parents

  11. What is Glogster? Glogster is a web-based, interactive resource that allows students and educators to create and share online posters. Users are able to add different forms of multimedia including images, audio files, and video files to their work. Using the EDU Premium subscription of Glogster, teachers are able to organize students by classes, making it easy to gauge student progress during a project, see final results, and share with the other members of the class. There is also a free version of Glogster. It has less management options but is a tool that is accessible to everyone.

  12. Why Use Glogster? The appeal of Glogster is that it does not have a defined purpose. Most often, it is used as an information presentation tool. However, the variety of subjects that can use it are limitless. Also, it can be a great collaborative resource. Glogster is also a powerful way to promote your library program because of the variety of multimedia that can be included. The program itself is a little awkward to use but easy to figure out. For all of us who feel constricted by time, this is a great tool because students need little direct instruction on using it.

  13. Glog Examples This link is the Glogpedia Library. Glogster allows users the categorize their glogs by subject. Other users may then view them to get ideas.Glogepedia LibraryThis link is my library glog, which I use to promote electronic resources and to excited students about literature with author links and book trailers.Welcome to Moravian Academy Middle School LibraryThis link is to a 6th grade student group project. As they are reading Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech in English. Students spend class time in the library researching one of the four national parks mentioned in the book.   14. Glog Examples Continued This link is to a 7th grade student group project. As they are studying volcanoes, students work in groups and research the major characteristics of a specific volcano. They then recorded information about their volcano and uploaded the MP3 files to their glog.Volcano Glog - 7th GradeThis link is to a 6th grade individual project. Students research genetic disorders in the library and use the information to create a glog.Genetic Disorders - 6th GradeThis link is to a 6th grade individual project. While studying the Renaissance in Social Studies, each student researched an important person from that time and created a glog about him or her.   15. Tips for Incorporating iPads • Share ideas! The amount of apps available is overwhelming so talk about what works and what doesn’t. • Remember, iPads are only one tool. Sometimes they fit into a lesson and sometimes they don’t. • Establish classroom management immediately. • Explore! Apps are constantly being added, get to know what is out there. • Embrace their strengths but accept their limitations.

Apps for the iPad • Here are a few apps that I have used: • Google Drive • Create documents and spreadsheets anywhere • Collaborative tool that is not device specific • Can be viewed offline • GoodReader • PDF reader that makes sharing and receiving documents from students easy • Easy organization of files • Option to create an annotated copy of your PDF file to write on, highlight, and mark up

Apps Continued • Prezi • Create Prezis anywhere • Able to create, edit, and share • Inspiration • This brainstorming tool is mobile! • Use templates or create and edit original maps • Destiny Quest • Everything Destiny Quest can typically do but now it is easily accessible wherever your students or faculty are • NASA Apps • One example of an organization that presents information in a new and exciting way • Most cannot replace more in-depth resource but can introduce related topics in an interactive way

Apps Continued • Skitch • Easy way to annotate and edit images • Able to take screen shots • Easy to share with other apps • Repix • Fun app that lets students add effects to their pictures • Jot! Whiteboard Free • Whiteboard app that lets you and your students quickly share ideas • Lino • Stickie note app that allows students to share and organize their ideas

  19. Creating a Faculty Support System • Always be approachable! • Meet faculty where they are at, not where you think they should be at. • Identify the experts in your faculty. • Create a buddy system. • Generate professional development opportunities. • Start an informal meeting for helping and sharing. • Keep learning fun for your faculty, just as you would for your students.
